Railroads Face Heavy Sherman Act Lawsuit in Atlanta

A $175,000-plus suit, filed by Rosser and Brandon for J F McGowan and J Winman of Inman & Co cotton merchants, targets Louisville and Nashville, Atlantic Coast Line, Southern, Seaboard Air Line, and Central of Georgia over handling of 10 098 bales tied to a pooling plan. The case cites Sherman antitrust law and seeks treble damages plus fees, alleging deliberate misrouting caused substantial losses and delays from Athens to Augusta and Europe. The petition links the Southeast Freight Association to anti competitive practices across Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. It claims the railroads coordinated freight divisions to fix prices and services, thwarting interstate commerce. The story notes a similar claim trend and recites a local endorsement of a Chamberlain remedy.
