Exoxville Tenn July 14 removal of the standing army from East Tennessee mining districts may occur within a week. Rioting miners show no great current danger but fears linger of renewed unrest when troops depart. A prominent Oxville Iron Co official warns convicts may plan a last minute move to stay.
The Virginia Negro Press Association debated capitalizing the word Negro in its proceedings. C D Cooley's Newport News preacher opposed printing the capital N, arguing people should spell the name as they wish. The resolution was overwhelmingly defeated.
Sheriff J W Wher escorted four prisoners to the convict camp at Oglethorpe county. George Harris Andy Thrater and Clark Duncan were sentenced for larceny from the house to the chain gang. Burrell Shaw was convicted of carrying a concealed pistol. The Sheriff called it the best remedy for croup.

Yesterday between one and two o clock a Madison county man named Dove hid a wagon with two mules on Broad street. A six year old child rode in the wagon seemingly unaware of the danger as the team bolted. Mr Moomaugh sprang forward and leaped toward the harness. He fell but escaped serious injury and the animals were finally halted near Bliche’s corner. The child and horsemen escaped unharmed.
Old citizens recall Mrs Eveline Scott wife of the late Bishop Thomas F. Scott who died in Gainesville Georgia after a brief illness on July 12 1893 born December 7 1802 in Jackson County. She married November 25 1830, joined the Presbyterian church then Episcopal. She aided the church and the poor and leaves no children. Interment at Pondergaas yesterday at 11.
A resident of Paryear's district bought a buggy in the city, only to have it damaged overnight with the dash board and cushions cut into strings. A widow nearby suffered a similar act and another neighbor had a buggy badly damaged. The writer condemns the act and seeks legal punishment for the responsible party.
Night guard Mr. H. B. Taylor surprised an unknown man prowling the Georgia railroad depot track. The intruder refused to halt and claimed no one could stop him. Taylor fired. the man cried out and fled toward the engine house, location details unclear and color undetermined.
