Mrs. Henrietta A. Marsh of Los Angeles reports a seven week grippe recovery after using Peruna. She praises the remedy as effective and plans to use it again. A letter dated August 31, 1901 quotes strong endorsement from Dr. Hartman and notes Peruna’s continued domestic and regional use.
Carrollton Georgia July 6 Nolan a man who claimed 99 percent support for governor is jailed for poisoning his wife. After their separation they spoke and Nolan gave her water in a glass. She died within a week and alleged the water was poisoned, leading to his detention in Carrollton jail.
Rabbi Levy, vice president of the Universal Peace Union, argues that toy soldiers cannons pistols forts and warships fuel militarism and bloodshed. He plans travel from Pittsburgh to Lucerne to attend a peace convention and visit Nuremberg toy factories producing 17 million dollars worth of military toys yearly. He aims to persuade manufacturers to shift to peaceful toys.
Objections arise as Clarke County seeks to halt city of Athens from paying over dispensary profits. Judge George C. Thomas hired by three citizens to file a superior court injunction aiming to block county funds, fearing loss to rural schools and increased anti-dispensary sentiment. Dispensary profits, split four fifths to the city and one fifth to the county, sustain school salaries and programs.
The council postponed the water rate question after a committee member requested more time. The matter will be taken up at the August council meeting. The Banner-Lande notes this for readers.

New Orleans July 6 Louisiana reports an active eruption from an artificial volcano in the Caddo district near Shreveport. A burning oil well widened into a 70 foot crater three months after ignition, swallowing derricks and nearby buildings while spewing oil and gas high into the air. Residents flee as the crater grows, unsure when it will stop.
A candidate for Judge of the Superior Courts in the Western Judicial Circuit declares his bid, argues for impartial justice and frugal court operation, and emphasizes familiarity with circuit residents and the public’s needs. He plans no early campaign and stresses fairness, courtesy, and efficient administration.
The Aberdeen Linen Mill near the Southern Manufacturing Co. will begin operation around August 1 with most machinery installed. Some gear may be ready by October 1, but earlier readiness will not hinder use of the bulk of the plant. The mill will produce crash towel cloth and employ many workers, signaling progress for Athens and promising further industrial growth.
Atlanta July 6 an appropriation of 15000 was asked from the Georgia state legislature to fund a pedestrian statue of General John B Gordon for the capitol grounds. The John B Gordon Monument Association has 6000 in cash and 4000 in subscriptions and a special commission of state officials will oversee the project.
City officials directed the mayor and waterworks committee to sign an agreement with Southern Manufacturing Co for laying a water main along Boulevard Nantahala Hiwassee Park Avenue and Prince Avenue including company property. Alderman Snelling opposed the deal citing legal and borrowing concerns. The company will advance funds with repayment over five years at five percent, and pay at least two hundred dollars yearly for hydrants. Work will start soon.
The water works electric pump will undergo a thorough inspection after one more month by the waterworks committee. If no defects are found, they will recommend accepting the pump.
Mr Herbert B Choate of the Athens Chamber of Commerce spoke at a Macon meeting on Georgia freight rates. He praised Athens as a major educational and commercial center with a yearly trade volume of about twenty three million dollars, stressing the city's interest in both inbound and outbound freights.
