Rail link planned to connect Athens with Savannah via Louisville
Atlanta papers report W. J. Oliver of Knoxville has bought the Savannah Augusta and Northern railway, clearing litigation and beginning immediate work to complete the line from Garfield to Louisville and thence to Athens. The new route would shorten Savannah to Atlanta travel by 20 to 40 miles, with independent operation but potential through service with the Seaboard Air Line. The Savannah Augusta and Northern now runs between Statesboro and Garfield and will be extended north to Athens, linking Atlanta, Athens, Statesboro, and Savannah through a network that could host through trains from Savannah to Atlanta once finished. The Knoxville railway plan may also extend the Sevierville and Eastern to Thomson, creating Knoxville Savannah access. The line was partly built, fell to a receiver in 1907-08, and was purchased at receiver’s sale by Oliver to protect his stake.
