Members oppose relocating the Oconee Street Methodist church across the river fearing a split in parish balance. The plan to move the church to East Athens has stirred strong sentiment and may be deferred to a quarterly conference for a final decision.
In Athens the cotton market reached ten cents per pound, the highest price of the season. Many bales remain in warehouses with analysts predicting further gains as the market strengthens and demand persists.
Senator Tillman recalled his race remarks praising northern hostility to black newcomers. He cited eight Indiana towns where black travelers are barred from stepping off trains and argued federal oversight tolerates disfranchisement. He said McKinley warned against black ballots and urged industrial progress for African Americans.
Georgia soldiers who enlisted for the Spanish-American war will obtain back pay for the two weeks from acceptance to muster. Gov Terrell secured the right to this extra compensation, with approximately $50,000 total to be distributed among the Georgia men. Claimants must prove their eligibility as for pensions.

Railroads agreed to a one fare round trip for the University of Georgia Summer School, with dates set by directors. Prospectus details the courses of instruction, promising substantial attendance and strong educational facilities for teachers in the region.
The town of Watkinsville will soon have a most complete school building. Work has been slow but the end is in sight. Five thousand dollars will be spent on the project, a credit to Watkinsville and Oconee county. This year under Prof A B Rowland the Watkinsville school has reached high efficiency with a large, enthusiastic attendance.
The last of the state pensioners for 1903 will be paid tomorrow and the 570,000 appropriated for Civil War veterans and their wives will have been disbursed. Commissioner J. W. Lindsey says all pensioners will be paid and books balanced, with about 75,000 still to be paid today.
Mrs. Mary Haygood an aged resident near High Shoals Georgia is reported in dying condition. She is an aunt of the late Bishop Atticus G. Haygood of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
Athens loss saddens as longtime hardware dealer Thomas Fleming dies suddenly at his Prince Street home from heart failure after a brief illness. Born 1822, he moved to Athens in 1878 and leaves seven children and a large circle of friends. He was respected for his genial nature and long service in T. Fleming & Sons.
Yesterday morning at nine o'clock the remains of the late Mr Thomas Fleming were carried from his home in Athens to Maxeys where they were interred in the family burial grounds. A large number of friends gathered at the Fleming home on Prince Avenue before departure. The services were solemn and Monte honore by Maxeys lodge, with Mt Vernon lodge members in attendance. Dr J W Walden is confined at home on Hall Street with a bout of illness. rest recommended but not serious.
A draft memorial argues Athens has strong advantages for locating the new Peabody Teachers College. President E O Branson and A L Hall prepare the document for the Athens Chamber of Commerce educational committee, awaiting Peabody trustees’ decision and a final committee vote.
Tech has pulled out of a track meet featuring teams from Georgia Tech Mercer and Emory. The University notes the withdrawal as due to cold feet. A three cornered meet among Georgie Emory and Mercer is likely, with Emory keen for the event.
Governor Terrell receives a request from Adjutant General Jorbin to appoint two Georgia State Troops officers for the parade at the Universal Exposition in St Louis on April 30. He names Colonel Clifford L. Anderson and Colonel R Usher Thomason to accompany him on that day. Hood's Sarsaparilla ad follows.
In Athens city court the Bernstein case against the Central of Georgia Railway Co concluded after three days. The plaintiff sued for damages after a horse was killed by a train on the Central road. A new trial was granted by the supreme court and a verdict again favored the plaintiff. Col. H C Tuck assisted Bernstein and Col. W A Harris of Macon defended for the railroad.
The son of Officer R. A. Burpee injured Monday afternoon by falling from a fence at home is recovering. The arm was dislocated but not broken and is rapidly improving, with the child expected to be well soon.
Justice Samuel Lumpkin of the Georgia Supreme Court traveled to Hot Springs to recuperate. He reports improved health and hopes to resume his duties on the bench soon.
Rev W P Lovejoy presiding elder of the Athens district has been named as a probable successor to Dr J W Roberts as president of Wesleyan Female College at Milledgeville in case Dr Roberts resigns after the May commencement. Lovejoy declined to discuss the matter saying he has nothing to say. The college board of trustees and Dr C O Branch will meet during May commencement. The presidency is described as one of the churchs most honorable gifts.
