Yesterday afternoon the jury found Bob Patman guilty of murder and recommended mercy. Judge Brand sentenced the colored defendant to life within thirty minutes. The deliberations lasted about twenty seven hours amid heat and fatigue.
Four men named George Lester Bulger Lester Pat Lester and Reese Wade were committed for murder by a justice court and held for the superior court to face trial in April. Chicago colored community plans a charity ball to raise funds to appeal the murder conviction of Thomas Jennings, a finger print burglar, aiming to challenge the admissibility of fingerprint evidence at the supreme court. Jennings, an ex convict, was convicted for killing Clarence Hiller after entering his home for robbery based on prints on a porch railing.
Portland hosts the western division gathering of the Oregon State Teachers Association with delegates from all counties present. President B K T Moore of Salem called the session as Dr. Margaret Schallenberger of San Jose State Normal and Dr. David Sneddon of Massachusetts Education Commission addressed the opening.
