The Banner of Athens Ga announces Ir. F. G. Umbach of the city won first prize in its dot puzzle contest with the lucky number 5458. Hundreds of answers were received, many close to the winning figure, and judges J F Rhodes and W F Dorsey issued the award of eighteen cash prizes based on Colburns certification of the dot count.

An Oconee Enterprise report recalls a violent afternoon storm in Athens area. Lightning struck F M McRee’s barn near Barnett Shoals, destroying fodder bundles and his buggy. A tenant house on G S Mayne’s plantation near Farmington burned, and five dogs and a hog perished sheltering inside.

Col Leoraert Hemphill died in Atlanta leaving an estate near 250000 dollars. Executor Robert A Hemphill a brother of the deceased filed the will for probate in Fulton county. Funds go to his mother 300 a year for life and 1500 to each sister. Shares to his two sons four daughters and widow. Charitable bequests include 1000 to Decatur Orphans Home 6000 to St Mark church 5000 to Emory College and 1000 for Reinhards College for girls. If a child dies without issue the estate reverts to remaining heirs.

Two Mammoth Dams Planned on the Chattahoochee River
Columbus Georgia August 21 an accord among the Columbus Power company Chattahoochee Falls company and the Coweta Power company paves the way for two new large dams across the Chattahoochee River just above Columbus and about 30000 horsepower will be added for use by nearby manufacturing industries. The Columbus Railroad company plans to extend its electric lines to link these developments with the city’s business district.
