An ex convict guided Indiana State Police and Porter County Sheriff Neil Fry to a shack northwest of Chesterton where two escapees were believed hiding. State militia under Gov. McNutt joined the search with 500 troops from the 113th Engineers Gary. A volunteer pilot scanned the area but reported no sign of the fugitives.
Vernon Walters 21 alias Jack West held in Guernsey County Jail after abducting a postmaster and forcing a cab driver to Byesville, then driving out Highway 21 before police stopped him. Walters claimed Cincinnati address and threatened a bank robbery.
Complaints that a chain of stores sold milk at one cent under the Columbus Milk Code were reviewed by the Ohio Milk Marketing Commission. Cr G McBride said the firm would present its side. A possible Common Pleas Court action could test the act’s constitutionality with the commission as defendant.

An 18 year old girl and a youth were killed when the stolen sedan they rode in crashed head on into a street car in Cleveland Ohio. Three companions were fatally injured as witnesses said the car traveling at 45 to 50 mph attempted to pass another vehicle and swerved into the street car.

Professor Matthew Brown Hammond of the Ohio State University Economics Department died at his Columbus home from heart disease. He was 65 and had served on the Ohio Industrial Commission from 1913 to 1915, appointed by Governor Cox, and was later a member of the Ohio Coal Mining Commission in 1913 and the Ohio Health and Old Age Insurance Commission from 1917 to 1919.
Weirton Steel closes its vest operation with 11,000 on strike in Weirton, 1,000 at Steubenville, and about 1,000 at Clarksburg. Amalgamated Association leaders say a major conference with Weirton officials occurred last night as the walkout expands.

He holds 21 bars worth 200774.34 stored at Chase National Bank whose vaults were impounded. He contends the Anti Hoarding Law violates due process and the Fifth Amendment.
Requests for relief grants amounting to 4 271 709 45 will be surveyed by the Ohio Relief Commission at a meeting tomorrow. Major E O Braught says the money supports October relief activities and is based on state and federal funds available. About 200 million dollars in relief funds could be spent through 1936. Grants include Athens County 34072 and Meigs County 15500. Federal Relief Administrator Hopkins gave Ohio 50000 to aid jobless transients.
Julie Robie 23 a Columbus School for Girls and Ohio State University graduate killed herself by leaping from a fifth story window of an apartment store in Columbus on Wednesday. She had been treated at Columbus State Hospital for neurosis.
Coal operators from the Hocking Pomeroy and Crooksville fields plan to form Hocking Coals Inc by October 1 to market all output from Southern Ohio fields. E H Davin of New York Coal Co announced the move at a conference with about 15 operators, representing 90 percent of the tonnage.

A successor will be chosen by a meeting tomorrow or Saturday as the committee continues to place men with federal road contractors and help workers find positions.
Marion Ohio September 28 Mrs Grace Downing of Middleport was elected representative to the Supreme Temple by the Pythian Sisters of Ohio at their convention ending last night. Mrs Mary Shaw of Cleveland was named Grand Chief The Grand Lodge of Ohio Knights of Pythias endorsed old age pensions.
Senate investigators exposed Henry Herberman shipping magnate whose vessels carried three pounds of letters for $234,980 or $81,326 per pound between Aug 1928 and Jun 1929. Records show total mail subsidies to his ships reached $6.74 million from 1928 to 1933 and his firms benefited from preferential rates and insurance subsidies.

In Boston on September 28, bandits stole registered mail pouches containing money and valuables. Bernard Welch, head of the registry of mails, estimated the total loot at under $10,000, possibly even less, after initial rumors. The heist lasted about one minute.
Four masked robbers seized three registered mail pouches at South Station in under a minute. Value totaled between 60 000 and 100 000 dollars with pouches from First National Bank of Boston and payroll cargos to Cape Cod and Newport Taunton areas. An electric jitney carried the loot as witnesses described the quick, nonchalant escape by a four-man crew.
Gibson County authorities requested National Guardsmen to halt a raid on 500 non union workers at two cooperative coal mines near Oakland City. Judge Dale Eby asked Governor McNutt for troops after Sheriff Hitch and Marshal Brown said the situation was out of their control.
