Ohio drug overdose deaths hit record as fentanyl abuse climbs

The Ohio Department of Health reports 2,482 accidental overdose deaths in 2014, a rise of 18 percent from 2013, driven by fentanyl often mixed with heroin. Fentanyl, 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin, entered the state as an illegal synthetic drug, linked to 502 deaths last year. Hamilton, Montgomery and Summit counties led fentanyl fatalities, with a record 177 heroin-related deaths. Officials cite prescription drop‑offs, tighter rules, and enforcement, while stressing prevention and removal of leftover medications from homes. A rise in baby deaths tied to fentanyl-laced heroin prompted involuntary manslaughter and child endangering charges against parents.
