The government reports 20,000 more people joined federal welfare programs in May bringing total recipients to 14.1 million as nonfederal general assistance fell by about 20,000 to 908,000. Expenditures reached 1.6 billion dollars, with cash payments down 1.4 million and Medicaid spending down 20.6 million.
U S Ambassador Arthur K. Watson and Chinese Ambassador Huang Chen met in Paris for a seventh private discussion since the Nixon era talks began. No details were disclosed. the session lasted about an hour. Watson has submitted his resignation to President Nixon due to ill health and is expected to leave Paris late next month.
