Residents Protest Highway Access Plan in Athens

A group of East Athens residents signed a 25 name petition opposing plans to convert McGuffey Lane into an access road to Athens Medical Center on E State Street. They fear increased traffic in a quiet residential area when Route 33 bypass eliminates current access and a new paved road would cut through the corner of McGuffey and Harris Drive. Dowler said proposals will be studied by location and design engineers and that replacement access would run from Harris Drive McGuffey Lane east to medical buildings as the interchange with Routes 33 and 50 is built. An Athens man, Hollis Summers III, is among 1 387 summer graduates from the University of Illinois with a Master of Arts.
