Athens County Mines Support Cuts Relief Aid

The Athens County mining area expects about 2,000 miners to drop from relief as work on coal mines resumes and WPA projects absorb labor. In August nearly 4,100 county residents relied on relief, with production drops from February showing rail coal output at 423,000 tons and August pay periods under 100,000. The shift to WPA is seen as easing relief burdens though exact figures depend on seasonal mining activity and wage patterns.
