Reports from Texas describe a hurricane sweeping the Rio Grande valley with at least 100 dead and up to 10 million dollars in property damage. U S relief teams rushed supplies and patrolled impacted areas from Fort Sam Houston to Brownsville as casualties rose and adobe homes collapsed.
Nominating petitions for Athens elections are due by Friday at noon after a delay in the clerk's office. The process requires 630 signatures and involves mediation of petition submissions ahead of the upcoming vote.

Mrs. Anna Eidemillier a 71 year old Troy resident was struck when a locomotive hit her horse and buggy near Troy Ohio killing the horse. She grasped an iron ring on the locomotive and held on until the train halted likely saving her life. She suffered a fractured leg and severe bruises.
Two balloons remain missing after seven balloons took off from Curtiss-Wright Reynolds Airport in Chicago for the Gordon Bennett race. Search efforts locate none of the two presumed to have drifted northeast and possibly descended.
United Press reports in Washington that Roosevelt will confer with General Johnson on Ford's NRA issue as the administration weighs whether to enforce the Recovery Act against the mass producer. They fear stirring sympathy for Ford and prefer to wait for a clear violation before acting.

In Middleport Ohio a fugitive, William Motley, shot Constable William Robson on the stairway of the old Epple Grocery Building on Third Avenue and Locust Street. Robson was wounded but not fatally as Sheriff A. O. Tracy and officers pursued Motley who fled down the front of the building. Mrs Motley was arrested nearby in an intoxicant condition and faces probate court hearings.
Yellow fever mosquitoes will bite encephalitis patients and feed on monkeys to test if insects can transmit sleeping sickness virus. Major James Simmons and Major W H Cornell arrive in St. Louis to assist in the sleep illness outbreak that has caused 78 deaths and 560 illnesses. Mosquitoes arrived from Memphis with 50 in a cage and 6,000 larvae. the army scientists brought the monkeys.
Athens County Medical Association enjoyed an outing Monday at Stewarts as guests of Dr T A Copeland. Inclement weather moved the program to the Rome High School auditorium. A basket dinner followed for physicians and families with Dusty Miller, the humorist from Wilmington Ohio, as speaker.
