H Crippen, 91, Civil War veteran and longtime Athens resident, died in Sanford Florida. He served in the Ohio regiment and was wounded in action. He leaves two sons Herbert and A H Crippen Tepe. Elks Club in Athens to meet tonight at seven as fall schedule is reviewed.
Two powerful tropical cyclones menaced the United States. One lashed the Texas coast near the Mexican border with Brownsville Port Isabel and Corpus Christi flooded and damages above 1 million dollars. The other struck Florida from the Bahamas, cutting off dozens of communities and causing initial losses around 500 thousand dollars.

Ohio Attorney General John W. Bricker ruled that a husband who serves on the board of trustees of a county children’s home may sell fire insurance for the home. Four more physicians from the U S Health Department, all expert epidemiologists, arrived to begin house-to-house checks of all encephalitis patients to determine how the infection spread.
Joe Alexander 25 a steamboat fireman of Point Pleasant died at Holzer Hospital at midnight Sunday from a lung abscess. He was admitted only a few hours earlier.
