Shutting Out the Handicapped in Athens Downtown
Elaine Seelhorst of Morris Avenue leads the Athens Community Relations Commission subcommittee on handicapped concerns. She tested downtown access with a wheelchair, finding curb lips hinder curb ramps. She urges reserved parking on Court Street and University Terrace, plus ground level spaces near the parking garage, to ease loading and unloading. She calls for accessible entrances, higher benches, and tax incentives for accessible businesses. She supports new anti discrimination laws and advocates a local watchdog committee of disabled residents and sympathetic parents to ensure accessibility in new buildings.
