Paratrooper Bernard Tom Killed in Holland Action
Bernard B. Tom, 20, paratrooper, was killed on Oct. 9 in Holland after two parachute jumps in Europe. He graduated from Athens High School in 1942, worked for Goodyear in Akron, and entered service Feb. 1943. He served in Ireland, England, and participated in the D Day invasion near Carentan, then jumped in Holland around Sept. 17. He leaves parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lee Tom and brothers Dana and Darrel. Dana, in India, is a radio operator on a B 17 and recently sent a nine week late letter.

Certificates Awarded To Swimmers At Red Cross Program
The American National Red Cross through local rep Miss Ellen Biddle issued certificates of recognition to children who completed 20 tests to earn beginning or intermediate swimmer status. In summer 132 children enrolled at Crystal Pool with instruction by Carl Nessley and Miss Ann Marie Kellner. Thirty five beginning and four intermediate certificates were granted to named children, including Joan Bush and George Thompson among beginners and Bob Heidler among intermediates.

Mrs Ash Injured in Fall After Leaving Car
Mrs Isaac Ash of 50 Sunnyside Drive suffered a pelvic fracture after exiting a car at Mill and Kern Streets. The driver moved the car slightly to allow another to pass, she reached for the door, lost her balance and fell to the street. She was attended by a physician and taken to sheltering Arms Hospital.

The automobile of H D Palmer from N College Street Athens was recovered in Columbus last night. Three Columbus boys were arrested for the thefts.
