Monahan of Hamden visit his parents. Harry Carlton has opened a blacksmith shop at Frost. George N. Woodward, Phoenix Insurance special agent from Hartford, spent Friday here. Miss Rathbone of Belpre gave an entertaining location and drill at I. O. O. F. hall last Wednesday.
Miss Villa Yates lies very low with typhoid fever in Hickory Grove while Apple ing sees a bountiful crop lifting farmers spirits. Miss Victora Wood, Athens county’s prominent teacher, closes a successful term. Mrs. Richey, aged resident, dies October 17. Funeral held at Mt. Pleasant Church. Fever and illnesses strike the area with whooping cough scarlet fever and typhoid. Bassett and Bates churches close due to fever cases.
Fevered talk follows a Sunday school convention in Allany as locals discuss oil under their land. Landholders and eager agents seek leases, with many companies canvassing the area claiming belt status and eastward advantages. Residents invite prospectors who can post good faith security to interview, insisting wells be drilled promptly rather than delayed like Hibbardsville.

Athens county Republicans announce speaking events in Nelsonville October 29 with J B Foraker and G C Grosvenor, in Athens October 31 at 3 30 p m with Asa S Bushnell and Asahel W Jones, and in Pleasanton November 4 with A M Lewis and J P Wood. Further meetings to be announced. locals urged to attend and invite Democrats.
Ex-Governor Foraker and Gen. Grosvenor will address Nelsonville Republicans at Stuart's Opera House on Tuesday evening October 29. This last major Athens county rally aims to unite supporters for an honest and impartial discussion of campaign issues.
Henry Herbert Fuller died in his forties after a ten day struggle with typhoid fever. A former teacher and long time locomotive engineer, he had recently worked as a shop superintendent in Charleston, West Virginia. He was a son of Dr. R. N. Fuller of Dover township and a grandson of Resolved Fuller, early local pioneer. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his brother in law, C. D. Gist, with Rev. Powell officiating. His loss is mourned by many friends and his bereaved family.
A Saturday Albany gathering hosted by Gen. Grosvenor and George Falloon drew a large audience of enthusiastic Republicans. Both speakers received strong attention and left a splendid impression. The event signals an increased majority for the fall vote on November 5th, reflecting deep local campaign interest in Lee County.

The Mirick farm oil and gas well was shot Wednesday afternoon at gaelock. Oil and gas produced in copious quantities, estimated by experienced oil men to yield from fifty to one hundred barrels per day. Three or four hundred spectators witnessed the shooting. Details next week.
The Albany Sunday school convention opened with warm town welcome and strong lectures. Rev. E V Long chaired entertainment while Rev George F Simms gave the opening address and Dr Powell responded. Prolific talks covered primary work music and evangelistic themes plus reports from county teachers and officers. The group planned to meet in Glouster next year and elects officers anew with additions. The South Eastern Ohio Teachers Association will convene in Nelsonville October 25-26 with speakers from Ohio State University Otterbein College and Columbus schools.
At Monday’s meeting D H Moore acting for capitalists proposed a 10 000 to 20 000 loan for 8 to 30 years at 6 percent with a fall funding to cover 11 600 existing debt and no interest on the balance until after April 1 1896. A 1000 loan at 6 percent for eight years was approved pending legality. A committee to plat the village and locate streets was appointed with five commissioners to hire an engineer. Defective sidewalks and various bills were addressed.
Miss Nellie Foster married J. C. Robinson at the Foster home on Wednesday evening at 8 o clock with Rev. Dr Powell officiating. The couple received many gifts and then left on the midnight train for Caldwell for a brief visit, amid warm congratulations. Guests from Caldwell Barnesville Urban a and Coolville attended.

Thomas Hutchinson of Glouster faced a preliminary trial in the murder of Siarsivar Couch after being brought in by Deputy Sheriff Biddisson. The judge found insufficient evidence to bind him over to the common pleas court and dismissed the case. Hutchinson had hid in the Glouster hills since his shop was destroyed by angry locals. Citizens hope for law and order to prevail amid lingering tensions from the Cook-Donnelly tragedy.
The grand jury completed duties Saturday afternoon with more indictments than in years. Targets include murder in the second degree for Frederick Fisher and Kellis Gibson, burglary for several defendants, larceny, adultery, fornication, keeping saloons open on Sundays, and tree destruction among others. Some indictments remain unpub licized pending arrests.
Several Athens horses competed in Marietta races last Thursday and Friday. D. H. Moore entered Tilford and Castaha in the 2:18 trot, with five heats needed to defeat them as Cora McGregor won the race. Peter Kern’s colt, in G. W. Ullom’s stable, finished fourth in the 2:20 mixed class. John Campbell’s Winfeld challenged Raven Bay in a 2:14 class, with Carrie H also at 2:14, and Carne H winning the second heat. times recorded were 2:21, 2:20, 2:18 and 2:16.
