Major General Kenly reports Handley Page giant bombers are nearing readiness to strike Berlin and heavy industrial targets in Western Germany. Allied air forces expand from Belgium toward extended operations with scarce observers and a surge of pilots sought to support the looming air offensive.
The front reports Allied advances across a 200 mile line from the North Sea toward Verdun. French troops seize Vandy near Vouziers, Mazinghem near Baha in, and Bazael. British and American forces expand gains near Douai and Lille, with Belgian units reaching the Zeebrugge–Bruges canal. Americans advance around Champigneulle and Bantheville, while Germans strengthen positions west of Aincreville. British, French, and American actions yield thousands of prisoners and renewed offensives across the region.
The Athens board of health postponed the physical examinations for men called in Athens county under the new draft due to influenza. Examinations were to begin next Monday with notices sent, but no start date is set until conditions improve. Provost Marshal General Crowder ordered the exams, but the local board halted them because too many physicians are busy treating influenza victims. The Sugar Creek area reports an epidemic with several deaths and rising cases in Athens.
London reports say the Kaiser briefly abdicated and signed his abdication before intervention by the ruling classes restored him. An armistice terms agreement under Wilson was halted as delays and riots in Berlin disrupted replies. Rioters smashed Berlin palace panes while Democrats in Germany rail against prolonging talks.
Moose Lake Minnesota October 19 authorities race to recover bodies from remote districts before snow. Total deaths in the northeastern Minnesota fires may reach a thousand with about 800 bodies recovered so far. Wisconsin Governor Phillip appeals for 50000 to aid Minnesota forest fire refugees.
Lexington announces the largest loose leaf tobacco market will open December 3 in the city. Officials estimate over 50 million pounds of barley will be sold during the upcoming season at the breaks here.
The funeral for John Burson will be held at the M. E. Church in Jerseyville Sunday at 2 o'clock. He will depart Athens at 1 o'clock. Friends may visit at 16 Maplewood Drive from 10 to 12 Sunday.
The Athens County Republican Executive Committee has cancelled all meetings advertised yesterday for the coming week due to ongoing Health Board restrictions amid the influenza epidemic.
William Peterl, a Ra cine businessman aged about 55, died early today from Spanish influenza. He is survived by a wife. Dr John Philson of Racine is seriously ill with the disease. The funeral of Curtis Howell from Cincinnati will be held Sunday. Raymond Howell, a brother, is seriously ill at his home.
Isaac Slaughter who owns many city billboards donated their use for Liberty Bond publicity during the campaign. His own posting contracts stayed unfilled until the loan received full public attention. Scouts under their scoutmasters did most of the bill posting, even climbing shale bank cliffs to put up notices.
A Moscow wireless message reports Grand Duke Nicholas, former Russian army commander, has reached Kiev. The note notes his prior death sentence by the Bolsheviks was recently reported.
William Smith of Chauncey sues the K and M railway in a law action seeking $901 plus costs after a fire caused by sparks from an engine destroyed his dwelling house outbuildings coal house and barn on October 5 1917 and damaged an adjacent house. He lists values totaling 1451 and notes insurance paid 550 leaving a balance claimed of 901.
Walter P. Porter, HS faculty member, joins Ohio University Naval Training Corps unit and is now in quarantine with them. His resignation leaves the Playground without a director and gym classes without a head. Prof. Morgan acts as Master of Troop Two until Porter’s successor is chosen.
Report of a demonstration by the German independent socialists in Unter Den Linden Berlin. Police halted the crowd from reaching the imperial palace and a clash left several protesters lightly injured by sabre. The crowd sang the Marseillaise.
Athens County has exceeded its $1,137,000 goal in the Fourth Liberty Loan by at least $50,000 as subscriptions pour in. Banks and towns reached quotas. Chauncey alone bought $19,350 toward an $18,000 target. Banks will stay open 7 to 8 pm for new subscriptions and payments. Counting exact totals will take hours as organizers sort ledgers and salesmen’ s records.
Wilson rejected Austria-Hungary’s peace offer noting changed conditions since January and declining their autonomy plan as a basis for peace. He insisted the oppressed peoples shall judge what satisfies their aspirations, effectively refusing to begin peace talks with Austria.
Washington reports aim to meet a 6.0 billion dollar Liberty Loan quota with oversubscription sought while prospects for subscriptions are described as good. Cleveland district notes subscribers totaling 18.88 million by 9 PM to meet its regional quota as of noon.
More than 60 American day bombers attacked Bayonville and Buzancy and other towns north of the line near Grand Pre. Four tons of bombs were dropped with focus on Bayonville a railway hub and supply depots. German fighters attempted to intervene but American escorts held the air.
