A massive explosion devastates a town with an estimated sixty dead, five hundred injured, and about forty thousand kegs of powder detonated. The blast levels around five hundred homes, with casualties reported up to two hundred miles away.
A town of about one thousand people vanished with five hundred injured and widespread destruction. Forty thousand kegs of powder exploded in the magazine, causing a concussion felt two hundred miles away across Ohio. Alec Willard and Mrs Henry Willard of Athens visited with Alec's mother. Ira Robinson and brother from Carthage passed through. Locals attended a topsy turvy social in Guysville Friday. Mr and Mrs Chas Tresize hosted their daughter Tuesday with Mrs Ollie Baker of Guysville as guest. Ione Willard had a seventeenth birthday party Saturday night with gifts and cheer. Ed Pearson of Columbus and Dr Henry Hammond passed through Thursday. Many local residents attended preaching at South Canaan Sunday.
Vienna dispatch reports Emperor Francis Joseph is out of danger after a restful night. The prime minister received a telegram from the grand steward at Schroman castle stating now we may hope and noting the monarch felt refreshed this morning.
Vienna reports a turn for the better in Emperor Francis Joseph's health. Doctors say immediate danger passed and fever subsided as inflammation ceased. The monarch rested easy and even attended to state affairs, prompting hopes for a full recovery barring new complications. Archduchess Marie Valerie and Princess Windisch-Graetz considered traveling to Vienna but were told there is no danger. The semi official statement cites a favorable condition and rising temperature noon.
The patient remains free from fever with strong heart action and stable general condition. Catarrh shows no improvement but is not spreading, and the afternoon cough is less frequent. Overall, favorable symptoms indicate a possible better day.

Herbert Beckler, guest of Levi Knowlton in this city, returns from cobalt prospecting in the Cobalt region on the Montreal River. He reports silver and nickel finds and cobalt used for chinaware color and batteries. Beckler notes Thomas A Edison sent a party to prospect. they found a seven inch load of nearly pure silver after their telegram return. The remote district lies 60 miles from rail, accessed by river through rapids.
Danville Virginia October 16 a large Negro man assaulted a prominent woman and her daughter throwing the former to the ground and choking her three suspects have been arrested and bloodhounds have begun tracking the scene. The town is in a high state of excitement and potential trouble is feared.
