24 Hour Alert Issued As Fire Hazards Rise
Ohio Division of Forestry ordered a state 24 hour alert as extended drought increases fire risk. Athens reports additional weekend fires. District forester Vern Honchell noted 24 hour radio operations and moment recall for staff. Wind is the key factor in potential fire size. Nine fires burned 20 acres in the district over the weekend with a Bedford Township Meigs County blaze destroying 15 acres. Bulldozer and tractor plow units helped contain the rapid fire while eight small fires burned five acres and were quickly suppressed.
