Belluno officials and Italian army officers said no new avalanche menace risked the Vaiont Dam reservoir beyond existing earth slides. Evacuation orders were lifted for brief returns as residents collected belongings.
Chief Cornstalk Hunting Grounds manager Mil lard Wallis said brush fires were fought since Saturday evening by about 20 firefighters until 10 p.m. The fire broke out again Sunday morning and was controlled by 2 a.m. Monday, burning several acres of the 10 000 acre area. Authorities said a hunter’s discarded match or cigarette likely started the blaze as squirrels season began in West Virginia.
