Lt. Cal D. Long of Middletown New Jersey led a heavy bomber crew in a raid against Rabaul New Britain. The aircraft scored a direct hit on a Japanese transport during the Tuesday mission.
The Office of Price Administration announced a Sugar Stamp No 29 will be used for buying sugar starting November 1 in the new ration book No 4. The new book will be distributed at school registrations in the last two weeks of the month. Stamp 29 covers five pounds of sugar through January 15, 1944. Stamp 14 in Ration Book One expires November 1, while Stamps 15 and 16 expire October 31.
In Cleveland a Washington War Production Board official urged the nations railroads to police every foot of trackage and shop facilities to find more scrap for armament production. Bert C. Bertram, WPB railroad unit chief, warned the stockpile is diminishing and a grave concern.
Washington announces extension of the five-cent-a-pound creamery and process butter subsidy to all commercial butter producers. The amended regulations apply retroactively to October 1.
At Solomons Island rescue scene, U S Navy officers described capturing the largest group of Japanese naval personnel ever taken from the water. In Birmingham Alabama a government action led to a labor stoppage at at least 17 coal mines employing over 6500 workers. Twelve mines idle on the late shift and five closed yesterday affecting about half the coal used by the Birmingham district steel plants. Sayre shaft of Republic Steel Corp with 1600 workers is among those closed.
