Ruth Elder and her pilot George Haldeman were rescued at sea after a 36 hour flight toward Paris. They survived fog, gales, and a fuel pipe failure that threatened their plane before being picked up by the Dutch tanker Berendrecht off the Azores on October 14. Dawn amphibian plane burns after salvage attempt at sea
