A transport with 3028 U S war dead arrives off the Golden Gate the first to return home from the Pacific. The ceremony includes a 21 gun salute and a wreath from leaves, with dignitaries Gen Mark E Clark Governor Earl Warren and Sec Navy Sullivan attending.
Ralph H. Dombey of Cleveland resigned yesterday as Assistant Director of the State Liquor Department. Director Dale Duniton announced the resignation effective Oct. 31 and said a successor would be named Monday. Dombey had been appointed Jan. 13 and cited discomfort living in Columbus while his family remained in Lakewood.
Steubenville report says vandals wrecked a Raul Clay Co. hoist at the Toronto firm just before the operator's arrival. Damage from yesterday's wreckage is estimated at about $4,000 to repair and replace, marking the third vandalism incident at the mine.
The War Department reports three soldiers from Ohio sent home from San Francisco aboard the Honda Knot. Sgt Richard L. Ashcraft of Guysville Athens County, Pfc Lester L. Kidwell of Point Pleasant Route 2 Mason County, and S-2-c Dewey L. Mayes of Henderson Mason County are to be buried in local or state depots with military escorts. State Liquor Department inspectors arrested Emma WheFever Torch and three others in Athens County for selling liquor without permits. WheFever Torch pleaded guilty and was fined 100 dollars plus costs, with a 60 day jail term suspended and two year probation. George Mullins Coolville Route 1 pled innocent and bond was set at 750 dollars. two others did not appear. Arrests occurred at a Torch filling station and Mullins residence near Coolville.
A tropical disturbance in the southern Caribbean Sea showed signs of developing into a storm. Hurricane hunter aircraft were ordered to investigate as forecasters warn it could become a dangerous storm or hurricane later today.

Maj. Gen. Blanton Winship, 77, former governor of Puerto Rico and veteran of the Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection, Funston Expedition to Vera Cruz, and World War I, died last night in Washington.

Harry Benedict, 45, had a pocketknife used to amputate a thumb and four fingers after his hand became caught in a corn husking machine while extracting a lodged ear of corn. Surgeons later removed the rest of his forearm. he was discharged from the hospital yesterday.
Two men in masks locked in a cooler and forced the Armour & Co packing house safe. They escaped with cash and checks totaling more than $2,000. Police appeal for witnesses in Cleveland.
