Athens man Joe Wood faces a first degree murder indictment for shooting Constable Edgar C. Mariner on September 6 while he served in his official capacity. The October Grand Jury returned 17 true bills across 42 cases after three days of witness testimony.
The October grand jury recommended employing prisoners jailed for nonpayment of fines to help reimburse maintenance costs. It urged constructing a new modern jail, noting prior juries made the same call. If a new facility is not feasible, it proposed adding steel bars to current jail windows for security.
Indictments allege burglary against James Hick and Donald Durfee of Athens for robbing Frank Stienmyer’s store at 1 a m on September 13, with items valued at $30. Other indictments include petit larceny for Fred Keirns McDougal, reckless operation and speeding on local roads, removal of mortgaged property, two counts of operating trucks with false licenses, and illegal manufacture of intoxicating liquor. Additional charges include assault against Andy Thompson of Redtown and James Brooks of Athens.

Albert S. Bethel 80 longtime Athens county Probate judge from 1892 to 1903 died at 10 o'clock this morning at 47 West Washington Street after a stroke of paralysis. He lived in Nelsonville earlier, then Athens, later engaged in coal development, retired for years. He leaves a widow four sons a daughter and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending. Bethel was a Knight Templar and connected with Athens Masonic bodies.
Chief of Police C A Maughmer and Patrolman Thomas Temple indicted for manslaughter by a county grand jury in Chillicothe after Ralph Strohmeyer died September 6 in the city jail. Strohmeyer allegedly was struck on the head with a blackjack while officers attempted to subdue him.
A preliminary hearing on a motion for a new trial for Emmanuel Ross, a minor condemned to die, will be before the Ohio Supreme Court. His attorneys contend the original trial occurred in a court lacking jurisdiction over a minor.
Ashbury Park authorities decided to buy six swans to graze Deal Lake. Citizens were warned not to feed the birds so their appetite for the aquatic weeds remains unimpaired.
Chief Justice Carrington T. Marshall of the state supreme court urged common pleas judges to prioritize criminal trials. He cited rising murders highway robberies and related offenses and argued swift criminal justice will deter law violators while preserving constitutional safeguards. The Athens high school forms the Grand Council, the top student body. John Alden is chairman with Fred Mansfield and Margaret Porter as vice presidents and delegates from senior and junior councils. Members include James Boden Jack Wadley Rachel Syx Wilheminia Arbogast Catherine Campbell and Fred Lee Helwig. The council meets biweekly under supervisors Marie Jewett and Edna Zick to plan assemblies and student projects.
In St Louis the Yankees surged in the World Series as Babe Ruth blasted three home runs. Ruth’s power sparked a 10 56 victory while the Cardinals struggled with pitching and fielding as Hoyt and others faltered. The win ties the series at two games apiece with New York heading to New York for the next clash.
