Rains hampered relief as Red Cross and troops aided victims in St Louis after a tornado. 500 hospitalized, 85 dead recovered, 23 unaccounted, 50 to be buried, and property losses estimated at 50 to 75 million dollars. Rescue work paused for ruin searches and rebuilding delayed until clearance.
Twenty nine towns are represented in this week’s bird picture coloring contest with 350 children sending in best work to the Messenger Bird Man. Winners in Class I and II include Bobby Chute and Luella Loudner, with art instructors from Ohio University aiding judging.

The federation reports 2,812,407 members, up 9,000 from last year. The carpenters union split over building trades affairs is resolved after a five year rift. An unseasonal October heat wave continued through Ohio with Columbus reaching 68 degrees, above the 61 average. On October 2 the high hit 86, the hottest October day since 1919, and Saturday set a 45 year record at 88 degrees. Cleveland also logged 85 degrees on October 2, its hottest October day since 1879.
Twenty three cases of infantile paralysis were reported to the state health department today. Some are old from August and others go back to September 12. Distribution shows one case in Harrison Wayne Hamilton Knox Morgan counties and in Cuyahoga Jefferson Summit Tuscarawas two cases each, with Belmont Stark five cases each.
