United Press reports a devastating cyclone in Illinois leaves hundreds dead and thousands homeless. Repair work begins on $50 million in damage as schools and public buildings are used for temporary housing and relief operations continue.
Cleveland patrolman Henry Frisch, 26, tried a William Tell challenge with fellow officer George Reynard, 34. The shot hit Reynard in the skull, he was rushed to a hospital, and the car crash en route injuring another bystander. Frisch was arrested on a charge of attempted murder as Reynard lay near death.
Columbus Oct 1 Prohibition administrator W H Walker announced new regulations on liquor prescriptions and permits for alcohol dealers. Prescriptions must be filled within three days unless extended by the physician. When spirits are mixed with other medicines the quantity cannot exceed six fluid ounces.
Dayton reports plans under way for the dedication of the Wright flying field on October 12 with speakers including Secretary of War Dwight Davis Assistant Secretary of War in Charge of Aviation F Trubee Davison Major General Mason M Patrick chief of the U S Army air corps General W E B Gilmore and Colonel Gh A Daeds.
In Perry County Ohio 73 miners voted to accept the ware scale offered by the Upson company meeting a coal strike shift. The scale is nearly identical to the Jacksonville scale and the mine handles about one thousand tons daily.
Governor Vic Donahey signed the first extradition papers for alleged airplane thieves. Three men Guy Jones Homer Seriff and George Moore were arrested in Berea Kentucky and to be sent to Troy for the theft of a Waco airplane valued at 2754 owned by T W Gurtey of West Virginia who had left it at a facility airdrome for a government pilot license.
In Cleveland a four week old girl nicknamed Baby remains unnamed as a judge weighs habeas corpus claims. Mr and Mrs Smith say the child differs from their other children and express hope she learns her origin without distress, while continuing to care for her.
An officer named Kop was killed by a pilot during a mail flight incident today at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The accident occurred on a flight bound for a destination unspecified due to limited readable text. The report notes the event at one o clock in the morning.
