Soviet forces report major advances on the Stalingrad front and a parallel offensives west of Moscow. German losses mount as the Red Army breaks new lines near the Don, captures towns and large stockpiles, and reports 66 000 Germans captured in the Stalingrad region over ten days.
Three members of a Cleveland family were killed in a train automobile collision in Mentor Township Ohio. Volney Landon aged 47 Lillian Landon 48 and Hope Wiersma not yet disclosed per deputy sheriff details. The crash happened at an unprotected crossing with an unobstructed view of the tracks.
A 49 percent drop in motor car deaths in October compared with October 1941 marks the greatest monthly reduction in U S history. The National Safety Council reports only 2000 fatalities for October, saving 1920 lives. In Cleveland, waitress Adeline Mosley, 48, was fatally shot during a cafe hold up by three men who fled.

This brings total losses since Dec 7 1941 to 543. Separately Standard Oil president W S Faris died at Millbrook New York after a heart attack.
Columbus Liquor Director Jacob T. Taylor announced an immediate one quart per adult daily limit on state retail liquor sales. Wholesale limits will equal last year’s weekly gallonage per permit holder, with tighter limits if brand supply is scarce.
The Vichy radio said French resistance to British occupation of Reunion ended at 8:45 a m. British Imperial forces largely South African troops reportedly landed on Reunion and seized the town of Saint Denis La Reunion. The Vichy bulletin noted resistance is being organized. Reunion, a French possession since 1643, was the last French island under Vichy control.
The Treasury launches a massive war financing drive as Uncle Sam seeks nine billion dollars in new borrowing this week. Three new Treasury securities are issued, labeled by Morgenthau as adapted for every type of investor, to cover growing war costs.

In Dayton, four aboard a four motor bomber escaped serious injury after a crash near Fairfield.
Australian ground troops with air and artillery support seized a beach area 900 yards east of Gona and advanced toward Sananda in New Guinea. Allied air attacks softened Japanese positions, while MacArthur’s bombers hit Japanese destroyers, aiding the Buna garrison. Naval forces also engaged a German auxiliary west of Australia, sinking and capturing most of its crew.
Ohio selective service director C W Goble orders 330 local boards to prepare for the sixth registration of youths turning 18. Registration hours are 9 to 5. The schedule groups births by date ranges from July to December 1924, with specific week windows in December.

More than 5 million dollars of civilian goods are bought under lend-lease for early shipment to French North Africa. A program for additional civilian supplies of many times that value is prepared. Supplies include sugar milk tea cheese. Also cotton textiles clothing and shoes will be lend-leased as shipping space allows.
Ten men were killed when an Army plane crashed about 2:15 a.m. half a mile southwest of the Sioux City air base during a routine flight. A guard barred civilians from the crash site as officials withheld names until next of kin were notified.
Firemen battled smouldering ruins eight hours after a blaze swept through a two story business block in Vanceburg Kentucky. Damage was estimated at 50 000 dollars. The fire started from a short circuit on the second floor in a building owned by O P Tannian who said losses are partly insured.
