A severe cold wave and snowstorm battered Ohio over the weekend causing multiple aviation and automobile fatalities. Three planes crashed, killing five people including two airmail pilots, while numerous car wrecks across Columbus Cleveland Dayton Hamilton Lisbon and other areas left several dead and injured.
Thomas A. Jenkins won the tenth district seat with a total 24,068 majority over Charles E. Poston. County returns show Jenkins carrying Athens 9,448 to 4,474, Jackson 6,396 to 3,074, Lawrence 10,421 to 2,647, Meigs 6,923 to 2,117, Gallia 6,231 to 1,672, and Vinton 9,448 to 4,474.
A double header freight train on the Baltimore and Ohio line derailed 14 box cars near Mineral when a wheel broke. The wreck delayed service toward Athens as workers cleared the scene. Recovery and track repairs were planned for three to four days with detours in place. Two wrecking crews labored overnight. the second No. 4 train originated in Cincinnati.
Alvin Rutter of Nelsonville faces charges of reckless driving and operating with unofficial license tags after a collision with a sedan driven by David J. Cox of Columbus near Chauncey. The crash left both vehicles badly damaged and occupants shaken. Cox was en route to Columbus with his wife and parents, Rutter and wife were in the other car.
Two prisoners from the Women's Reformatory were captured in a farm silo near Marysville after escaping Sunday. They are identified as Deida Smith of Canton and Mabel Felds alias Hazel Duncan of Dayton. They had vanished after the noon meal.

Approximately $10,000 of Ohio Farm Bureau Corporation stock has been sold to fund a branch office in Athens to aid farmers in Athens Meigs and Vinton Counties. About $60,000 more is needed to complete plans for sub offices in Coolville Amesville Albany and Stewart with larger stock blocks bought at $100 a share. The project aims to improve marketing of wool and fruit and to secure better prices for farmers through cooperative efforts.

LONDON Nov 26 report says at least 21 ships wrecked or distressed as gales lash the coast causing 17 deaths. Wind speeds reach 93 mph in Liverpool and 81 mph at Holyhead while radio contact with ships, including City of Agra, is lost.
The most severe typhoon in years swept Southern Luzon Island with gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Damage is estimated in millions of dollars with 30 percent of the coconut crop destroyed and substantial destruction in Tayabas Province including wharfs and other properties.
Turner P. Litteral, 39, was shot by his father William P. Litteral, 65, after Turner allegedly threatened with a pistol. Police say the coroner exonerated the father, who testified self defense following the incident.
Twenty six men were captured in a series of federal raids in Steubenville and transported to Columbus for detention. Agents from the Department of Justice and prohibition bureau seized two night clubs linked to the Post Office robbery case and recovered ten dollar bills from safes. Among those detained were club proprietors Joseph Guido James Casali and Thomas Walker and a local justice of the peace who tended bar at Guido's. Evidence was aided by an operative posing as a real estate broker known as Mr. Allen.
In Algiers area a coasting steamer named Cesaree sank in a weekend gale on the Mediterranean. Fourteen lives were lost. Coast guard and naval authorities investigated the wreck and search efforts were ongoing.
A Puebla dispatch reported several killed and 30 wounded in street fighting during Sunday local elections. The Universal wire said the clashes erupted as polling proceeded, underscoring volatile politics in the city.
The Athens Messenger Information Bureau releases a modern five color map of the United States and territories, compiled with federal cooperation. The 21 inch map features a continental map front and back a historical atlas with statistics on areas populations and key cities. It costs ten cents per copy plus postage and handling and is available by mail to Frederic J. Haskin in Washington D C.
Light snowfall and a sharp temperature drop to 16 degrees above zero greeted residents of Athens and surrounding areas. Snow flurries occurred in the afternoon and evening with ground cover by morning while traffic slowed and anti freeze sales surged. Weather officials predicted a warmer day ahead with melting snow.
Toledo police report bandits cracked a concrete safe at the Hoffman Candy Company early today and escaped with $1000. The same firm was robbed of a similar amount eight months earlier.
Repaving of Courtney Hill reconstruction was completed Friday and the roadway opened to traffic Friday night. Contractor Fred H. Beckler said remaining drainage work and guard rail installation will finish the project this week. The hill is brick paved on a concrete base with heavy piling to prevent bank slipping toward the river.
The Interstate Commerce Commission hearing on Chesapeake and Ohio's bid to buy Pere Marquette stock at 133 a share was adjourned until tomorrow after a flood of documentary evidence. Virginia and West Virginia groups sought permission to intervene in support of the C O petition.
Gilbert Cooper, 50, jailed in Xenia, charged with killing Caleb Hitchcock, 23, in Cedarville during an argument over traps along a creek. Police say Hitchcock was shot during the dispute.
James L. Edwards, 41, proprietor of a local grocery, was killed Saturday night when he resisted a bandit who escaped. Police reported the armed robbery ended in his death with the assailant fleeing the scene.
George W. Davis, 33, a handbook operator, was under arrest here today charged with killing his wife Elizabeth during a quarrel. Police said he choked her to death and found finger and thumbnail marks on her throat.
Chauncey Ohio reports paydays for miners on Friday and Saturday with many drawing large wages. Local operators note merchants see improved business and the area’s times look brighter as miners return to work in local operations and nearby fields. several workers have come back to the Hocking Valley.
Marie Hayden proprietor of a Athens beauty shop and Robert Williams of Nelsonville were badly hurt when their car was forced off the road near the Herrold place on the Athens Nelsonville highway around 12 50 last night. Hayden suffered cuts bruises and hip injury and was taken to Sheltering Arms Hospital in Athens for an X ray. Williams sustained severe scalp lacerations and a nearly severed left ear. The crash occurred as a passing maneuver by an oncoming car forced their vehicle into a ditch. Both were knocked unconscious and later aided by motorists from Athens before medical care. First aid at the Hayden home was by Dr. Hubert Hyde.
A Ford touring car bearing license 315 728 was found on Mechanicsburg Road this morning and taken to Athens by traffic officer Wilson Alor. It was left in Beasley’s garage. the owner may claim it there by paying the expenses.
John W. Reeder of Tipton Iowa says March 4 will be a big day as he will hold a hat for President-elect Hoover during the Washington inauguration. Reeder has known Hoover since Hoover’s boyhood in West Branch Iowa.
President Elect Herbert Hoover and party reach Amapala on the Honduras coast aboard the Maryland on November 26. They will visit Amapala and La Union before crossing to Union, El Salvador, with receptions planned by Salvadoran officials and potential greetings from President Romero Bosque. The voyage continues toward Corinto, Nicaragua, with landings and dinners along the Gulf of Fonseca.
MT VERNON Nov 26 The first sledding fatality of the season occurred Sunday when 11 year old Daniel Leach son of Clarence Leach president of the Ohio Conference of Seven Day Adventists was run down by a car driven by Carl Ericsson of Elyria Leach had hooked his sled to another machine and cut loose the car struck him.
Members of the 4 H Garden Club who completed their summer work and exhibited at the Athens County Fair will be honored at a dinner tonight by the Athens Kiwanis Club at the Varsity Inn. Prizes from the Kiwanis Club will be awarded to those with the best records and garden work. The committee includes T H Johnson, county extension agent, Harvey Householder, Larthur Brooks.
The Bluejacket Battalion of 326 men has been withdrawn from Nicaragua and sails home to the west coast aboard the Vega and Kanawha. The unit was sent to Nicaragua with the Special Service Squadron and will land at San Pedro and San Diego respectively.
The Rev. Harry Crampton aged 76, chaplain at the Boys In School, died Sunday after three weeks illness. He came from Mt Sterling and formerly lived in Preble County.
