Athens merchants announce the Christmas shopping season with a wide display of gifts for all the family. The Messenger presents its annual gift edition with toy, clothing, gadgets, furniture, appliances and more. Shop early for fresh stock and better service to avoid crowds.
Athens stores showcase advanced toys with wind up cars, remote controlled cattle and milk cars, spring suspended rocking horses, and new dolls like Benny Braids modeled after Dick Tracy. Boys get train attachments and trucks including dump styles, while girls find doll houses, sewing kits, and wicker furniture. A makeup kit appeals to teen interest as shopping continues on page 3 B.
Fashion notes from Athens showcase women's wear for the season with robes, gowns, and bedsocks in flannel cotton and nylon. Velvet, corduroy, and wool mixes lead a trend toward matching vests and boleros, long gowns, and short ballerina dresses, all complemented by pastel full length coats and velvet hats.
Local retailers highlight robes shirts ties pajamas coats and sweaters as ideal gifts for men this Christmas. Gabardine robes with initials, rayon satin robes, wool shirts, mackinaw jackets, jac shirts, and varied ties with Christmas motifs lead a broad selection. Athens retailers report Christmas furniture emphasizes utility and beauty with pieces serving double duty. Coffee tables become card or dining tables, buffet tops lift to reveal workspace, and canasta tables seat eight. Card tables feature pastel tops and plastic leather surfaces alongside brass lamps and silk shades.
Athens city fire department will install Christmas decorations this season under the decorations committee of the Athens Retail Merchants Association led by Frank Baker Jr. The work begins Friday November 23, with new red and green laurel rope and expanded lights including plastic bells Christmas balls and light figures featuring Santa Claus and carol singers.
