Governor elect Martin L. Davey announced the appointment of Mrs Myrna Young Smith age 32 of Kent as chief of a four person secretarial staff for the governor's office. Smith worked with Davey in his free surgery venture since high school graduation 14 years ago and her appointment marks a first for Ohio governors naming a woman as secretary.
A San Francisco warehouse fire unleashed 100 tons of quick lime after floodwater breached sacks. Twenty two firemen were hospitalized as flames and fumes forced use of gas masks and boots. Fire crews dumped flaming sacks to contain the lava like mass.
Three acquaintances of Florence Thompson, 17, were questioned by Sheriff Charles Stratton and Prosecutor John W. Bolin about the assault last Saturday after a dance at Glouster. Thompson was found early Sunday beside State Route 13 north of Redtown with a fractured skull, likely from a heavy blow, and taken to Mercy Hospital in Columbus. She was unconscious aside from a brief moment when she allegedly said a man hit her with a club.

In Hammond Louisiana the man who tarred and feathered dentist Dr Sedgie Newsom four years earlier died in a Main Street gun battle while seeking vengeance against the dentist. Starns fired at officers from a prone position and was fatally wounded. his father Burlin Starns was arrested on attempted murder after grabbing a shotgun. Newsom had previously sued Starns for damages and his wife Gladys later divorced him for alleged defamation. The Starns brothers faced indictments that ended in a mistrial.
Frederick Landis 62 congressman elect from Indiana Second District died of pneumonia at his Loganport home after days of illness. Family including his brother Kene Landis and National Baseball Commissioner were summoned to the bedside. Landis, known as The Hoosier Editor, was a radio commentator and author of several works including The Copper Head and Days Gone Dry.
Six violators arrested by State Game Protector B. F. Swartz faced fines for possessing raccoon, skunk, or opossum hides out of season. In Cleveland a car crash killed three people and injured three others early today. Victims include Rev. Philip O'Brien 34 an assistant at St Agnes Parish. Miss Mary Mis. and Mary Moorhead 24 both of Cleveland. Sergt Cornelius Sullivan led the manslaughter squad investigation.
