Athens County community appeals for donations to reach a $15,000 goal to aid impoverished families next year. Initial $1,000 in voluntary contributions arrived from local businesses as workers organize team captains, solicitation lists, and installment options through January.
Norton Virginia November 14. M H Hughes coal operator Pineville Kentucky his son Donald age 14 and Deputy Sheriff Jack Munsey were killed in a gun fight following a hit and run automobile accident. Norton policeman William Willis said the Hughes car sideswiped a taxi and fled. The Hughes car was later overtaken and Hughes shot Munsey before being killed by Willis. The boy was struck by stray bullets and died in a hospital.
About 130 Otterbein College students attended an all Otterbein dance at Williams Grill in defiance of the longstanding campus ban on dancing. The school, aligned with the United Brethren denomination, has enforced the rule for many years.
In Youngstown on November 4, trial of executives from the Youngstown Telegram began before three Common Pleas Court judges on indictments accusing fraudulent advertising.
Akron inventor Harold Clark Johnston of Johnston Welding Co plans actual flight tests in two to three weeks using a steam driven airplane. After over two years of experiments and a 10 month engine build, he aims to manufacture soon with a small boiler behind the engine and a two place open cockpit plane built by C. V. Babcock.
Elmer Ellsworth Stone former general purchasing agent and director of American Steel & Wire Company dies of a heart attack. Born in Hockingport Ohio he retired last year from the steel industry. Survived by wife Florence two sons Daniel and John and daughter Mrs William Mauck. Funeral services set for Tuesday in Cleveland Ohio. Stone belonged to Union Club and Ohio Club of New York.
Milk wagons halted as 1200 drivers walked out over wage cuts. Reports of potential producer joiners fueled fears of a milk famine. Non union drivers clashed with strikers, route books were seized, wagons stopped, several arrests made and guards placed on deliveries.
State Police in Pennsylvania and New Jersey were ordered to pursue abductors of eight year old William Bauers taken on his way to school. Three men fled in a small sedan with New Jersey plates, triggering a cross state manhunt.
In Madison Wisconsin C R Secrest reports breaking the nose of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright during a street clash. Four Wright school students later rode to Secrest home at Taliesen Wisconsin and horsewhipped him until he fled with a butcher knife. The students were arrested and pleaded guilty.
Gunmen held up the Kroger store on West State Street Saturday night, escaping with about 150 dollars after racing to the cash registers. In a separate incident at Kerr Hardware on South Court Street, Elza Davis, 40, of Wellston, was captured hiding behind a counter after the officer found the back door open. Davis, an Ohio State Penitentiary alumnus released in 1931, faces a hearing before Mayor Wood. A Banks Ice Cream Plant break-in yielded only minor cash.
Hunters may pursue rabbits from tomorrow until January 1 with a daily bag limit of five. Partridge and ring-neck pheasants open alongside rabbit season, but partridge is limited to four and pheasants to two daily, cock birds only.
Albert Barrett known as Dago Albert, 25, and two accomplices robbed a local drug store. Kennedy the assistant manager fired at the fleeing car, Barrett was wounded in the head and died at the hospital. His companions escaped.
