In Athens county southeastern Ohio a heavy turnout chose local officers. Mayors elected included Alex Moore in Athens, L. J. Eberle in Nelsonville, J. R. Rochester in Logan, and J. Hess in Pomeroy with others pending results in Glouster.
John W. Gray, age 81, in Athens to pursue legal action against Rollo Putnam as Marietta police chief. Gray won a record mayoral victory with about 1,668 votes over Willard Bartoe in a 4,000 vote pool, while Eberle trailed in the mayoral race. Board members Monks and Lowden won seats, with several council races decided by small margins.
Nelsonville voters re-elected Mayor L J Eberle a Democratic incumbent to a two year term. He defeated his challenger in yesterday’s city election as he secured another tenure as chief executive of Nelsonville.
Off-year voting across eleven states yielded few national signals. In New York Alfred E. Smith remained strong despite Republican gains in the assembly. in Mississippi Theo Bilbo won a largely unopposed race. Other results included Lodge's wet-leaning mayoral win in Detroit and Jones losing the Concord mayoral bid. Kentucky and Ohio saw notable contests and clashes over betting and prohibition, while Philadelphia and Pittsburgh reflected party machines at work.
John W. Gray, a Civil War veteran nearing 80, was elected mayor of Marietta by about 1.66 percent, the largest Marietta majority. A Democrat in a Republican city, he won while opposing former police chief Rollo Putnam and spoke in Athens during a court of appeals hearing. He pledged to serve Marietta to the best of his power.
The U S Navy Band will perform in an Athens charity concert on Saturday December 3 under the Athens Elks. A jazz ensemble will play before intermission, showcasing popular American jazz music that draws strong applause.
Grosvenor McKee was elected councilman and James B. Kinnison city solicitor of Canton yesterday. McKee, connected with the Timken Roller Bearing Co., is a Canton native and Ohio University alumnus. Kinnison, a lawyer and Ohio University alumnus, is son of James E. Kinnison of Jackson and trustee of Ohio University. Both alumni belong to Greek fraternities Phi Delta Theta and Beta Theta Pi.

About 700 delegates met at a cooperative congress in Mount Carmel Pennsylvania to address abuses in the anthracite industry and expand markets. Ralph E Weeks led the session as permanent chairman. D Warriner and John L Lewis were barred from touching on wages or working conditions in tonight's talks. Hoover and Governor John S Ufisher were to give major addresses this afternoon.

John Jones former Third Indiana cavalry sergeant of the Civil War died at 5:15 this morning at his Hooper street home after five years of declining health. Funeral services are set for 10:30 Friday at the Jerseyville M E church with burial in the adjoining cemetery. He was born in Marysville and married three times, with his third wife surviving. There were no children.
The past 24 hours saw a two degree swing with a high of 34 and a low of 32. Data indicates temperatures held steady through the day with readings around the mid thirties in the period shown.

Concord New Hampshire November 9 Miss Helen Gwendolyn Jones 24 a former telephone operator and university graduate failed yesterday with 2200 votes to 61 year old Mayor Fred N Marden in a 15 campaign. Jones vows to try again while Marden led with a larger but costly bid.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that Acts of God fall outside the workmen's compensation law. The decision affirms the Lorain Court of Appeals ruling that Paul Slanina was not entitled to compensation for injuries from the Lorain Tornado.
Athens judge Edwin D. Sayre of the appeals court resumes duties to hear the Putnam police appeal from Marietta after a yearlong illness from heart trouble. The return marks a full return to work and back on the bench.
The Court of Appeals heard arguments on the Putnam reinstatement case with Judge E D Sayre presiding for the first time in over a year. The dispute involves Rollo Putnam, deposed Marietta police chief, whose civil service appeal followed a Noble county court reversal. Early returns from 334 of 484 precincts show the Seasongood backed charter group leading in Cincinnati. Six of nine council seats appear to be won by charter party candidates, securing control for two more years.
Returns from about 7 049 precincts show the referendum measure 359 280 in favor and 693 578 against the anti propaganda. The vote tallies indicate a two to one rebuke to the Marshall bill and a stronger anti-saloon stance in Ohio. The Ohio Anti Saloon league faced its first major rebuke in nine years.
In Columbus on November 9 Governor Vic Donahey planned a special session of the Ohio legislature early next year to create a new system of minor courts after the Marshall justice of the peace bill failed in the off year election. The bill sought to fix the fee system of justice courts declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
The National Anti-Saloon League declared a defeat of a prohibition measure as a broader issue failed after the Tumey ruling. Senator L T Marshall’s bill passed the legislature but became law without Governor Donahey. voters statewide rejected the referendum while rural counties and Marshall’s home areas voted against it. A separate chiropractors bill sought to shift regulation to a new state commission, overshadowed by the justice of the peace measure.
