In Athens County two new council members are elected. The mayoral race margin shocks both sides. Hocking levy rejected again. Albany Chauncey Pomeroy Logan install new mayors. Logan okays oil well drilling. Vinton County defeats its school levy.
In Ohio Governor Rhodes faces a bruising battle with foes claiming the result signals victory for common sense. The note appears on page 23 amid coverage of Rhodes and overlooked Democratic rivals.
Ohio Turnpike fatalities reach twenty two in ten months, more than double last year. Turnpike director Allan V. Johnson cites ongoing 55 mph limit and fuel conservation measures made permanent by the legislature in June.
The Ohio Second District Court of Appeals was to decide whether to restrain a common pleas judge from closing pretrial hearings in the Lester C. Emoff murder kidnap case. Dayton Newspapers sought the action in an appeal of Judge Stanley Phillips ruling to close the hearings to assure a fair trial for the three defendants.

President Isabel Peron appeared headed for departure amid rising demands for resignation and reports she had lost the backing of the labor movement, her last power base in Argentina.

Barrett 57, Democrat, overwhelmed former mayor Raymond Shepard Republican in a decisive re election. Barrett carried 20 precincts for a 2 742 to 1 452 win and captured 65 percent of votes, topping all candidates in the Athens election. Shepard, 67, struggled with low turnout and split results across wards.
Violet Hollenbaugh, a Republican and former city council member, won Nelsonville’s mayoral race 850 to 492 over Democrat Robert Auflick. She will serve a four year term starting January 1, the first woman to hold the post. Other results include Mrs. Nancy Kern elected city auditor and Mrs. Dianne Hoffman winning city treasurer by narrow margins. Democrats retain council control with four seats.
Ohio voters approved three constitutional amendments including a nonprofit bingo exemption used for charitable purposes. The tally favored Issue 9 by a slim margin 1 388 606 to 1 195 660. Other measures passed ease ballot rotation and shorten primary ballots.
Athens and Lawrence counties approved 1 mill levies to fund SEOEMS for five years. Gallia and Jackson counties rejected levies. Jackson has now failed two years in a row. SECEMS board will meet in Wellston to interpret results and plan next steps.
David Lipsey of Rt. 1 Athens posted an action ad offering a 7 month old puppy. The ad appeared in Thursday's paper and the puppy found a new home early that evening, pleasing Lipsey with swift results.
