Voters go to the polls Tuesday for local and school board races with issues including liquor sale proposals. Turnout is anticipated in counties such as Cuyahoga and Mahoning as candidates seek offices amid party tensions and statewide contests.
In Topeka Kansas the new state treasurer's watchman, a rural brutish man, failed to phone in an hourly report. Police rushed to the office as he struggled to operate the telephone and claimed he could not locate the crank.
Four companions of William Luthy an Ohio University student shot at Torch last Friday were to be questioned by Prosecuting Attorney Harold J. Rose to align their stories with Calvin Russell the 65 year old farmer held for the shooting. Luthy’s condition remained favorable at St. Joseph’s Hospital Parkersburg and could recover barring complications. Russell in jail admitted firing five six or seven shots to scare the boys while county officers noted the act followed fears of retaliation for an earlier flashlight strike.
A fall hurricane, initially sweeping south through the Bahama Islands, veered west toward the eastern Florida coast. Warnings extended from Miami to Stuart with gusts expected over 75 mph and high tides. At 7:30 a.m. EST the storm lay about 100 miles east of West Palm Beach moving 7 to 10 mph, with experts cautioning further direction changes.
Columbus state registrar of motor vehicles revoked today the driving privileges of four persons convicted of driving while intoxicated. Chase, 34, allied with gangsters and connected to Alvin Karpis, was previously tied to kidnaping cases.
Fort Smith Arkansas doctors treated 15 year old Ray Swann of Potter after he swallowed a cocklebur while curious about why burrs cling. The burr lodged in his lungs and damaged his larynx but physicians say he will recover.
Investigations into a Saturday crash near Toledo focus on George Smith 25 of Toledo driver of the auto. An eight serious injuries total 37 people were hurt when a Lake Shore Electric interurban struck the auto and rolled over. M4 passengers rode the interurban. Smith was hospitalized with a possible skull fracture. Seven more remained in hospitals.
Women of Aztecan Vera Cruz occupied the municipal building after officials fled amid a mass march. They armed with clubs over reports of a house to house religious search and faced troops who threatened to fire if needed, but withdrew to avoid bloodshed.
Mil waukee ends eight day bomb terror as 21 year old Hugh Frank Rutkowski dies in a garage blast. Patricia Mlymarek, nine, is killed and family members injured. ten others hurt. Investigators link Rutkowski to a spree that damaged a court house, banks, and police stations. property loss put at $75 000.
Greece voted overwhelmingly to recall former King George II to the throne in a plebiscite. Official results show 1,491,992 endorsing the monarchy against 32,454 for maintaining the republic. The foreign minister notified the former king in London and a delegation heads there.
In Hocking County a dispute over a four lease of a truck mine in Frog Hollow led to a gunfire incident Sunday afternoon. Clarence Henzy fired several shots at Fred Morman with a .34 caliber revolver after Morman allegedly threatened him with a pick. Neither man was injured. Henzy was taken to Logan for investigation by Sheriff Joe Farbearn.
Postmaster General Farley announced the appointment of Charles H. Mulien, currently acting postmaster at Pomeroy Ohio, to a new post.
Funeral services are set in Dayton Wednesday for Reverend W. R. Funk a longtime publishing agent for the United Brethren Publishing Company and a founder of Otterbein Home in Lebanon.
The National Distillers Products Corp. says it has resumed all Ohio newspaper advertising previously withdrawn. The company cites a cleared misunderstanding and notes claims by James Miller of misquotation by a National Distillers agent. Miller rejects press quotes and asserts fair ad opportunities for responsible distillers in state business.

In Memphis Tennessee Daley Alexander Root 28 a contract investigator for a Memphis wholesale concern was killed at home after a party with his wife and friends Lucille Underwood 21 an employee at the hotel where the party was held reported she once dated Root but evaded him after learning of his marriage The wife is charged with murder and told officers she and Root separated six weeks ago The victim was the son of a Chicago minister The killing involved a red haired cigarette girl and a dispute over her interesses
Two women died when a freight train wrecked an automobile they rode in at a crossing near Marion. Victims were Mrs. Anna Andes, 70, and her daughter Anna, 38. The driver, A. E. Wien, escaped uninjured. At least four other highway deaths were reported in the state.
Prominent men and women joined a Will Rogers Memorial Fun Hour to urge support for a national humanitarian fund honoring Will Rogers. Herbert Hoover spoke from Palo Alto, Rudy Vallee sang from Connecticut, Billie Burke from California, and Lady Astor from London. Eddie Rickenbacker and Eddie Cantor praised Rogers and the worldwide response. The fund is led by a committee coordinating small subscriptions, with The Athens Messenger serving as local depository and a contribution coupon printed in the paper.
