President Hoover told the Senate that a delay in balancing the budget has caused foreign anxiety about the U.S. ability to meet obligations. He called for reduced expenditures, adequate revenue, and relief, and said he would back broadening special excise taxes toward a general sales tax if Congress favors it.
The Senate adopted the Connally Amendment raising income tax burdens, restoring a four percent rate on the first four thousand dollars and eight percent on the next four thousand with surtaxes rising to 55 percent for million-dollar incomes. The vote stood 84 to 3.

Dr William A Vovert of Philadelphia told the 144th general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Denver that schools homes and churches bear responsibility for the rise in crime. He denounced Christless professors cynical politicians and educated ruffians as factors in the trend. The assembly also defeated a bid by fundamentalists to withdraw from the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America by a heavy vote.

Residents of Athens honor fallen servicemen with a two day memorial including church services a parade from the Armory to West Union Street Cemetery and a salute by Company E of the 134th Field Artillery and the American Legion. Veterans and citizens recall the boys in blue and the nation’s past. The procession featured the K T Crossen Post Drum and Bugle Corps World War veterans and youth groups.
State prohibition officers with Deputy Sheriff George Ingalls arrested Frank Bandy of Greenfield Township in Gallia County. They confiscated several quarts of liquor, two barrels of mash, a small still and apparatus. Bandy pleaded guilty before Mayor Stormont, fined $150 and costs, and said the liquor was for his own use.
Six Ironton and Portsmouth residents were arrested by a Kentucky game warden while fishing from a government dam on the Ohio River near Haverhill. The Lawrence County Fish and Game Protective Association planned action, arguing the arrests were unauthorized and outside Kentucky jurisdiction.
Miss Ruth Giesen leads eighth to tenth grade home economics at Athens Junior High and Athens High School. Charles Nolin pony mail rider killed in Deadman's Gulch during 1860s gold rush was honored at Sturgis Memorial Day. A memorial unveiling was carried out by Mrs. Tom O'Brien, one of the gold seekers who found his grave. Nolin carried mail from Red Cloud Agency to Deadwood and was slain in 1876 after the Custer Massacre.

A new tax law reduces municipal bond tax to 5 percent of income yield or 3 percent on a 6 percent bond, improving net yields. The city’s debt is 4 percent of assessed value, with no defaults, making Athens bonds safe and profitable for individuals.
Sheriff Bruce Pratt planned to seek a kidnaping warrant today against Merle Hooper a 31 year old married school bus driver from West Millgrove Ohio who allegedly ran away with a 12 year old girl daily passenger. The two were believed to have gone to Toledo a note from the girl said we are leaving and do not blame Merle I love him deeply and may try to kill myself.
Coroner M B Crafts reported Charles Nickerson aged 32 ended his life by inhaling carbon monoxide gas. A floor board had been removed and the exhaust pipe directed into the automobile.

Funeral services for Dr. Eber D. McKinley former Athens resident who died in Alamogordo New Mexico were held Saturday afternoon at his brother’s home in Athens. The Rev A Y Wilcox and Rev R A Powell conducted the service with Fred Lee Tom singing. Burial followed in the West Union Street Cemetery. He served as Alamogordo mayor health officer and was a Rotary charter member and a county commissioner. He practiced medicine in Atlanta Ind and Alamogordo and served as U S Army examining physician at Fort Bliss and Camp Cody. He leaves a widow three children and several relatives.
In Niles Ohio on Decoration Day a weeping willow was planted and dedicated at a Central Park fountain as a memorial to Augustus Lindbergh Jr. The dedication marks a somber tribute by local residents to the child.
