The worst flood in 54 years swamped Athens as the Hocking River crest reached 24.63 feet at 9 a.m. Saturday and slowly fell. Evacuations affected hundreds including Ohio University students while power and phone lines were knocked out. Crews worked around the clock with police, National Guardsmen, and volunteers as Route 33 opened and five county roads remained submerged.
