The Senate investigative committee put off decisions on public release of partner lists tied to the Morgan firm amid a wider inquiry into the wealth and influence of J. P. Morgan & Co. and Alleghany stock dealings. Witnesses debated whether to reveal Treasury-linked inside deals and asset values dating back decades.
A Washington memo from Will to Morgan praises his character beyond his alleged racket. Will predicts Morgan’s appeal to senators and argues Morgan could be a “regular guy” with money and brains, urging public service or philanthropy to find happiness and public love.
Captain James R. Patrick oversees examinations for about 300 reforestation army recruits from Athens Meigs Gallia and Washington Counties at the Athens Armory. Exams start 6 a.m. and successful men likely depart that night for Camp Knox Kentucky. Doctors from Athens and Gallipolis conduct the checks with reserve officers in charge including Major James P. Porter Captain Patrick and others.
Eldon Wells and Floyd Westfall confessed after breaking into a Point Rock dwelling. A Meigs County grand jury indicted them for breaking into an uninhabited dwelling and they pled guilty. Wells received 1 to 15 years in the Ohio Penitentiary. Westfall got three months probation.
William Truax, organizer for Ashtabula, addressed the Pomeroy Unemployed League urging formation of a league in every Meigs County community. The group criticized relief secrecy while planning a committee trip to Columbus to meet with state relief director Major E. O. Braught.
Congress and President Roosevelt pressed ahead with the administration's program of national rehabilitation as the Morgan inquiry continued. Major actions included passage of a Blue Sky securities bill and Glass insurance bill, with public works, taxation changes, and measures to curb tax avoidance expected to pass. Severe rainstorm struck the Sharpsburg district near the Athens and Morgan Counties border Thursday night. Highways flooded with debris. tracks and trestles at Black Diamond Mine shifted. W. R. Goddard farm near Amesville saw sandstone wash into the barnyard. In Athens the Hocking River rose to 11.4 feet and fell to 5.3 feet the next morning as showers forecast continue.
The Plains High School postpones graduation ceremonies for the class of 33 due to the death of County Superintendent Alex Root. The service occurred this afternoon, and next Wednesday night May 31 remains the new date with the original program.
Lieut Ray Noble the county relief director announced a program issuing garden seed for house gardens and required recipients to plant and care for them. Authorized workers will visit to assist, and failure to use or tend plots may result in deductions from relief orders.
Mrs. Sadie Allison Salters aged 55 died last night at her Columbus home after a long illness. Her husband Elza Salters died about 28 years ago. Funeral party arrives in Athens Sunday at noon and proceeds to 35 East Carpenter Street. Services at Christian Church Sunday at 3 PM. Burial at West Union Street Cemetery.
After being mislaid for two months the Ohio ratification of the Federal Child Labor Amendment moves to Washington for final action.
Columbus May 26. The administration's 40 million dollar sales tax proposal backed by a modified Mort Plan school bill gains momentum as the Legislature recesses. The bill by B O Skinner would create a public school fund and pay 17 dollars per elementary pupil and 29 dollars per high school pupil, setting minimums of 35 and 60 respectively. It reorganizes districts countywide, cuts salaries, consolidates offices, transfers duties to county officials, and envisions continuous census keeping with annual savings above 1 200 000.
James Mills twenty one, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Mills of near Mills Station, suffered a fractured ankle and leg burns when his tractor overturned Thursday morning. He was found at 11 oclock after lying beneath the machine for two hours. Mrs P 8S Marks of Gandyville was admitted to Holzer Hospital Thursday afternoon. Anna Ervin of Gallipolis was released after treatment.
Local attorneys report letters from a Mexico attorney urging divorce clients to go there on commission. Mexico allows a divorce after one day of residence if both spouses want it, and in three weeks if opposed. In special cases parties can be represented by proxy cutting travel needs.
Athens police arrested Burt Wilson on Union Street last night for intoxication. He was taken to the city jail and will be arraigned before Mayor R. Wood today.
Members of Company 505 of the Reforestation Army in Hocking County, led by Capt. Lamar Weaver, move into a growing camp layout with six barracks, a mess hall, administration building, and bath house. Drilling a 120 foot water well progresses as Columbus doctors inspect the site. most men hail from Cincinnati with 12 from Cleveland.
Nelsonville report on miners and operators reconvening after an all day session at Fika Hall to negotiate a ware contract. The miners' full scale committee includes Crockeryne and Pomeroy delegates. All operators are represented. No official progress statements issued.
The Beau mont incident on May 17 initially labeled murder but a Columbus lab test identified the blood as animal. Prosecuting attorney John W. Bolin announced the finding after lab tests on a blood sample. Coroner L. F. Jones and county officials investigated the scene with no further evidence.
Three of four men charged with taking merchandise valued at $23.35 from Earl Halbert’s store at Canaanville on May 18 were arraigned before Magistrate Pearl Miller Thursday. Jake Darnell Ivor Darnell and Gaylord Radcliff, all near Canaanville, pleaded not guilty, were bound at $1,000, and sent to Athens County Jail for failure to furnish bond.
Gallia County farmers have secured 4305 in seed loans for 1933 from the United States Department of Agriculture, according to records on file with County Recorder Lucille Rees.
Mr. G. H. Woods of Mineral ran a unique classified ad representing animal mineral and vegetable kingdoms. The notice offered pigs, lumber, and other goods and reportedly sold everything after its first appearance.
At Miller farm near Langsville a 72 year old woman Mrs John Miller and her 6 year old grandson John Arnold Miller died after the boy fell into a cistern and the grandmother tried to rescue him. The tin cover collapsed and both sank. rescue efforts failed for the boy. Jean Miller alerted Eva McCalla who directed help as the community sought aid.
In Cincinnati on May 26 a 10 percent wage raise for miners employed by coal operators affiliated with Appalachian Coals Inc regional sales agency was adopted by its directors. The increase will be added to coal retail price and apply to hourly and tonnage labor, per executive director R. E. Howe.
In Gallipolis on May 2, several dry days allowed first planting in the Community Garden to be completed. Potatoes and corn are in the ground and further planting awaits more plowing. Unemployed men who refused garden work have been cut off the flour list during recent weeks. City distribution occurred Thursday at the car in the local railroad yards.
Charleston authorities notified Athens police to be on the lookout for a sedan filled with gypsies suspected of traveling through the area. The alert emphasizes a suspected group crossing through local routes and requests vigilance from officers and the public.
