Nelsonville considers phased sewer rate hike and water project

Nelsonville council delayed a sewer rate increase, sending it to finance and utility committees for study. The council approved an emergency ordinance to fund water system improvements and authorized bids and contracts once financing is secured. Projections warned of a 25 percent first tier and a 100 percent higher second tier in sewer charges, with quarterly minimums rising from 3.75 to 4.06 dollars and commercial rates also affected. The city seeks state and federal funds for a three phase, 2 million plus sanitary sewer plan, with a goal to act by June to access favorable interest.
