More than 600 servicemen clashed at Travis Air Force Base California in a three day bout of racially charged disturbances. A civilian fireman died fighting a blaze at a barracks and another injured man was hospitalized as police and sheriff units restored order.
In Chattanooga Tennessee a 22 year old Leon Anderson was shot and killed by city county and state officers during a call about sniper fire. National Guardsmen on the streets reduced four nights of disturbances as curfews and bans on liquor firearms and ammunition sale remained in effect. Police faced accusations of abusive conduct from local pastors while investigators opened inquiries into the shooting.
Rep. Frank Mayfield Jr. charges 13 or 14 new life insurance firms bilked Ohioans of about 20 million dollars in 1970. He will turn over tape evidence against three large firms to the Insurance Director and says more proof exists from the Better Business Bureau.
Grenade blasts at Camp Humphreys near Seoul injure one American and three Koreans amid accusations that Black soldiers protested discrimination. U S authorities confirm grenades stolen on base. Col McWhorter offers a $1000 reward for recovery.
Heavy thunderstorms and at least one tornado damaged power lines and buildings in Ohio. A funnel cloud struck Kenneth Cummings farm near Indian Lake harming home and farm buildings with no injuries reported. Unconfirmed reports of another tornado near Findlay. MITTENWALD Germany NATO ministers begin two day talks to set groundwork for East West arms reductions with Soviet Union.
Congress approved 97.3 million for SST burial costs awaiting Nixon’s signature. Senate dropped 58.5 million earmarked for airline repayments while the House had refused extra funds. The FDA faces criticism over DES hormone residues claimed to reach consumers and cattle, with Proxmire urging an immediate ban.
A longtime Lima State Hospital attendant says she and other staff would testify to a grand jury about brutality at the hospital. She cited a diabetic patient in a coma who was denied medication as one incident she knows about.
Comptroller General Elmer B Staats told the House Public Works Committee that federal treatment standards are needed for municipalities and industries before pollution becomes a problem. He said current law lets the EPA act only after pollution exists.

Washington reports that several committee chairmen hold keys as the House nears a decision on President Nixon's plan to consolidate Peace Corps VISTA and other volunteer agencies into the Action Corps. The Senate Government Operations Committee is also weighing the plan with floor action expected later in the week.
Ohio’s unemployment rate fell from 5.1 to 4.7 percent as civil labor force totals declined or rose slightly. Total employment increased 0.9 percent to 4,305 thousand with gains in farm and nonfarm sectors. Seasonal nonmanufacturing expansion boosted payrolls while weather lifted agricultural hiring and manufacturing fell modestly with orders and some plant layoff activity.
Employment in nonmanufacturing sectors rose 1.2 percent to 2,507,000 in April as disputes settled and milder weather boosted contract construction. Gains spread among real estate operators, auto and building material retailers, while amusements, refreshment stands, and Great Lakes shipping saw less activity.
In Senate debate on a draft extension bill, Sen. Nelson urged barring draftees from Southeast Asian combat unless they volunteer. He cited 14 331 draftee deaths in Vietnam through 1970 and argued the Army relies on draftees, urging a shift to volunteers. Kennedy urged removing a $6 000 combat enlistment bonus, while Senate plans votes on related draft amendments.
Superior Court Judge Harold M. Mulvey will hear arguments today on a possible retrial for Black Panthers Bobby Seale and Ericka Huggins after a six month first trial ended in a deadlocked jury. A meeting of all parties is scheduled.
