Ohio University President John C. Baker will retire July 1, 1961, after serving since 1945. He set a 65 retirement rule for administration staff and cited the university’s growth, including a PhD program and new campus buildings, plus a branch program enrolling about 2,500 students in several towns. He plans to comment further at year end.
Ohio University President Dr John C Baker told faculty he will retire July 1961 under a 1948 retirement regulation setting 65 as the age for administrative service. He noted the policy required trustee approval for exceptions and said trustees approved his public statement after the May 1960 meeting.
Western powers in the United Nations Security Council oppose a Soviet resolution condemning U S spy flights over the Soviet Union. Ceylon and Tunisia are expected to abstain or side with neutrals, while Poland and the Soviet Union back the measure and others plan negative votes. An 18 year old man from The Plains is in critical condition at Lancaster Fairfield Hospital after a shotgun blast from his nephew Daniel Deal 13 following an argument over listening to TV or radio programs. Police report Deal said Britt slapped him then used a 12 gauge shotgun. the gun discharged accidentally.

Weighing 24 tons the 22 by 5 foot craft will patrol the earth for enemy missiles using infra red sensing to detect heat trails and radio alarms to U S defense centers within about 30 minutes. MIDAS launched Tuesday from the missile base and will operate for three to four weeks, possibly three years, tracking latitudes 28 degrees north and south of the equator and avoiding the Soviet Union.
Thousands of leftists marched around Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi’s Tokyo residence for the sixth straight day protesting the U S Japan security pact. Organizers from labor, Socialist groups and left wing students urged Kishi to step down and to derail the pact with the United States.
