The Soviet Union released a C47 and the nine Americans aboard after a cross border incident near Grunds Hagen East Germany. The U S Air Force and Army announced ongoing discussions on evacuation options and future movement of the crew and passengers.
The May term grand jury indicted Johnnie A. Boykin 23 of Dallas Texas on second degree murder for the April 24 knife slaying of his brother in law Robert L. Bailey 25 at the Bailey family home Athens Route 1. Bailey died at Sheltering Arms Hospital the same night. Prosecutor Joseph B. Vanity sought first degree murder with proof of premeditation. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. and Bailey died at 10 p.m.
Waves spawned by Chilean earthquakes swept the Pacific, killing or missing at least 350 across Japan Hawaii Chile and Okinawa. Japan reports 85 dead 78 missing 884 injured and 46000 homes damaged. Hawaii suffers 33 dead 23 missing 53 injured in its worst disaster since 1946.
President Eisenhower met with the Security Council in a special session ahead of his nationwide address on the summit conference collapse. Allen W. Dulles and Douglas Dillon attended though not council members. The president spent the day refining his speech for a Wednesday radio and TV broadcast outlining future aims for the United States and allies.
The Washington summit debacle becomes a dominant campaign issue as Senate members clash over the term appeaser. Senator Fulbright plans closed hearings on the Paris Big Four meeting collapse and may call Herter and Dulles to testify later this week.

Floyd Shuffstall 51 a steelworker discharged from a mental institution shot and killed his wife Vera Rose Shuffstall 47 and neighbor Harold DuPont 42 in Cooperstown Pa. He fled on foot into nearby woods as authorities pursued with about 60 troopers and volunteers. Jealousy motive cited. Derald said his mother was a close friend of DuPont. Two Shuffstall children were in the house and unharmed.
The Democratic party selects a national convention chairman and announces a likely keynote speaker. Gov. Leroy Collins of Florida is favored as permanent convention chairman by a 14 member arrangements committee. Sen. Frank Church of Idaho is named as likely keynote. Gov. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin is the other contender.
Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery landed in Peiping to assess Communist China's part in world affairs. Peiping radio said he was greeted at the airport by Gen. Wang Shu-sheng deputy defense minister.
The United Nations Security Council debates Soviet spy charges against the United States and considers a four nation proposal to urge resumption of Big Four talks with U.N. help. Diplomats expect approval of the motion while a Soviet resolution may fall short of the votes needed. The call emphasizes continued disarmament talks and nuclear test suspension and urges Britain France the Soviet Union and the United States to resume discussions with U.N. support.
In Boston a merger of Unitarians and Universalists forms a 200000 member body in about 800 churches. The American Unitarian Association delegates approve 721 to 143 while Universalist delegates back it 365 to 65. The new association takes effect May 1951 with local autonomy preserved. Members span all states territories possessions and Mexico.
In Corpus Christi a housewife demanded arrest when her husband was drunk. Officers explained they cannot arrest for intoxication in a private home. She carried him to the curb and dumped him in a public street, then urged: arrest him. He was booked at the city jail.
A 20 year old Cleveland man in poor condition after pouring turpentine on himself and lighting a match police say he attempted suicide due to inability to hold a steady job. Included brief court notes from Painesville and Cincinnati police cases.
Republican objections blocked the Senate Labor Committee from meeting on a wage bill to raise the minimum to 1.25 an hour. The 9 a m session was canceled as Everett Dirksen of Illinois objected to a committee sitting during Senate in session. A tentative session was set for Thursday.
James W. Handa, 37, held on 5000 dollar bond awaiting trial on bad check charges in Detroit. Police accuse him of passing 89.90 dollar check at a Detroit bar on December 5. Other suspects include Milo Davis Sr. of Cleveland held at Akron and Milo Davis Jr. sought by authorities.
