Washington May 25 The Mexican chargé d affaires at Havana has been recalled by the Carranza government. Unconfirmed rumors say diplomatic relations between Mexico and Cuba have been severed, according to the State Department.
Mrs Carl G Fisher led the Red Cross parade in Indianapolis riding a large a gleaming car and bearing the stars and stripes. She wore a military style appearance as grand marshal of the event.
Washington reports 53 soldiers of Company B 58th Infantry missing after the British transport Moldavia sank in the English Channel. Total 482 American troops aboard. London adds 56 missing, likely killed by torpedo explosion, crew saved by British destroyers. Moldavia, a 9,500 ton steel twin-screw steamer, struck at 4 am and sank in about an hour.
Captain Johnson describes the Moldavia torpedoing in the English Channel. Troops slept in uniform bunks, lined up for boats, and sang as they evacuated. The ship sank after continued maneuvering and depth charges by escorting destroyers. Survivors are at a rest camp, praising officers and British destroyers.
The German submarine that torpedoed the British steamer Inniscarra was sunk by an American destroyer off London on May 25. Prisoners from the submarine have been landed.
Washington reports the American Red Cross war fund exceeded its 100 million dollar goal by noon, with official tallies earlier placing it at 98 to 99 million. In the Lake Division covering Ohio Indiana and Kentucky subscriptions reached 8.57 million toward a 9.4 million quota. Indiana and Kentucky exceeded their shares while Ohio subscribes 5.15 million of 6.4 million.
Recent enrollments at the local recruiting office include Earl E. Kincaid of Malta entering the Industrial Training course at Valparaiso University Ralph L. McIntyre of Zanesville joining the Cavalry Roy L. Thompson of Cutler serving in the Medical Corps James W. Hall of Nelsonville with the Engineers Kenneth W. McCaskey of Athens in Field Artillery and John H. Pierce of Athens in Coast Artillery. The Ordnance Department now accepts all men beneath or above draft age with pay from 30 to 61.50 dollars per month.
Twenty year old Sims pled guilty to burglary and larceny at Nelsonville after arraignment of not guilty. He confessed to the April 10 1918 confectionery store theft at George Kouri and stole about 125 dollars in cash. He was sentenced to the reformatory at Mansfield and ordered to pay costs.
London reports a large German army breached the promise not to advance in Russia and is within about 25 miles of Kurek in the Dnieper Don region as of May 24.
American troops on the Verdun front are holding a stretch of the West line in support of French forces. Headquarters says the Americans are making an exceptionally good showing in the trenches. The area includes the Argonne Forest near St. Menehard, about six miles behind the lines.
Orville Wright, 40, a Cedarville farmer, and his young son and daughter died when their automobile was struck by a train today at a crossing near Xenia. The crash ended a quiet afternoon for the Wright family.
Washington May 25. Maximum prices on zinc set at twelve cents a pound for grade A zinc paint in East St. Louis and fifteen cents a pound F. O. B. at the plant for sheet zinc. The War Industries Board pact with producers keeps wages and prices stable for the war and aims to curb speculation while ensuring supplies to government Allies and public through September 1.
A soldier on a passing train in Athens asked a nearby young lady to buy him a pie for a quarter. She bought the pie, but the shopkeeper cut a five cent piece from it to cover the shortfall. The puzzled girl rushed to catch the train to deliver the pie.
An impressive ceremony marked the burial of heroes from recent raids on Zeebrugge and Ostend. Representatives of the army navy and Dover government aided mourners and relatives in this solemn testimonial.

Washington May 24. Government fixed prices for bituminous coal reduced by ten cents per ton. Railroads will pay the fixed price and abandon preferential service to certain mines. The new prices take effect tomorrow at 7 a.m. Based on short tons, the cut averages about five percent, saving the public roughly 60 million dollars.
The clinic will run Monday afternoon from 1 to 4 for children from Washington Smith Maple and Pr streets and nearby side streets at the Federal clinic in the City Building Union West Street.
