A British air squadron bombed the Austrian submarine and seaplane base at Cattar o, setting fire to piers and barracks. The Prince of Wales arrived from the Italian front to join celebrations marking Italy’s entrance into the war, and was greeted by thousands of cheering boys with flags.
In Lor raine on May 23 night the American army plans a Memorial Day observance. Local graves will be decorated with flowers and flags honoring soldiers, with French troops remembered as well. Chaplains will lead services for Americans who fell in battle.
Lorain May 23 five hundred National Tube Company workers painted a man yellow and wrote slacker on his back after he refused to subscribe to the war chest fund though earning 250 dollars a month as a mill laborer.

Meantime James Brooks, of West Union Street, telegraphed that his son in the 125th Machine Gun Battalion left Camp Sheridan for Camp Lee Virginia Wednesday night.
The U S Marine Corps plans a spring drive targeting college graduates and current students. Recruits may join aviation, with promising athletes sought for flight training, gunnery, and later officers training. Named athletes include Eddie Mahan Harvard Yale stars and Carlisle Indian star Pete Garlo.
The Ohio University baseball team traveled to Huntington last night and will face Marshall College in games today and Saturday. Athens High meets Zanesville Friday afternoon. The lone local game is John Hancock High versus Glouster High at Ohio Field Saturday afternoon. The local squad should win after last week’s strong showing, with an interesting game anticipated.
Miss Catherine Stinson began a mail carrying flight from Chicago to New York but repairs to her aircraft delayed her departure from Binghamton. She planned to depart Mineola Field at 2 PM following the Erie Railroad line and had covered 783 miles in ten hours the previous day, landing at 6 40 PM.

In Paris on May 24 an American air squadron joined defenses. Of thirty German raid planes on the city only one got through. it dropped bombs, killing one and wounding twelve. Suburban blasts caused additional injuries. Echo de Paris warns of a coming British air offensive.

London May 23 United Press report says Second Lieut. Berry McLachlan of the Royal Field Artillery went to rescue two men trapped in a dugout struck by a gas shell without a mask. He continued duties as forward observations officer despite gas exposure and later was sent to a hospital.
In Edinburg on May 23 Premier Lloyd George declared Allies are confident the outcome favors them. He said Germans push to beat American help, submarines remain a danger but not decisive, and Allied ship production outpaces German losses. He noted America provides limited manpower compared to Russia’s collapse.
The indigo plant residue left after indican extraction, sold as indigo, is used in India as a fertilizer for tobacco crops.
