In Columbus, lawmakers are not expected to act on clarifying Ohio blue laws this session, leaving enforcement to remain as is or shift to stricter crackdowns. With the session nearing June 14, leaders indicate little legislative action on the issue despite ongoing public debate.
Reports from Rome said Pope John XXIII, 81, suffered a possible setback in illness overnight though Vatican sources had no new relapse. His regular Wednesday audience remained on schedule.
Negro leaders plan to file suit in federal court to void a Birmingham school order expelling or suspending over 1000 pupils who demonstrated against segregation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr urged restraint and said there would be no mass walkout or renewed demonstrations while negotiations continued.
President Kennedy faces Alabama Governor George Wallace as a potential threat to his 1964 southern support. Wallace plans a dramatic stand against integration at the University of Alabama, possibly in Huntsville in June or Tuscaloosa in September, aiming to block a Negro student’s admission and attract martyr status.

Astronaut Gordon Cooper flew to Washington to receive a medal from President Kennedy and describe orbiting Earth 22 times. He arrived with his wife and two daughters, greeted by officials including Eugene Zuckert Curtis LeMay and James Webb and escorted to the White House for the ceremony.
Harry Erlewine of Point Pleasant escaped Mason County jail on Thursday evening and fled through the courtroom before returning with his attorney S D Littlepage to surrender in the jail office on Tuesday morning.

In a swift crackdown, loyal troops crushed ex-Col Talat Aydemir's coup attempt in 12 hours. Martial law announced in Ankara Istanbul Izmir as 10 insurgents including Aydemir were arrested. Seven killed and 23 wounded in the capital as cadets resisted surrender before government forces regained control. Gen Sunay proclaimed the plot crushed and four colonels were detained.
