Berlin reports indicate Allied response to final German counter proposals will shape the signing of the peace treaty. If Allies modify terms as Germany suggests, acceptance may follow. if not, Germany may reject to avoid ruin, while workers push for immediate peace even at risk to the government.
Berlin reports Germany has finished counter proposals for the peace treaty and sent them to Versailles. They allegedly demand a plebiscite in eastern provinces, removal of French control over the Saar basin, and changes to ship seizure provisions. Troops are in Silesia as unrest grows amid the crisis. A Paris bulletin notes a possible four day extension to finalize the proposals.
Director General Hines releases March revenues and expenses for railroads under federal control. Operating revenues reach 371,520,077 while expenses rise to 342,152,207, yielding a government net loss of 59,952,117. Traffic falls about 18 percent, but revenues rise due to 25 percent higher rates.
Washington May 21 Representative Fitzgerald declares his resolution targets the War Department plan to aid packers dispose of 264 million pounds of meat while keeping prices high. He cites rising warehouse stocks and overseas shipments as reasons to act. New York May 21 Housewife leader Mrs Julian Heath backs Fitzgerald urging GOP action to reduce food prices nationwide.
The Athens County War Chest board met in Athens and approved funds to mail several thousand rebate checks immediately. Checks are prepared audited and sealed but mailed by district over several days to ease bank handling. An audit of books will begin soon and the board expects to operate for at least two more years.
May 21 report from Chicago details a crime gang alleged to have stolen about 250000 dollars in six months. Plans were traced to New York City and arrests ongoing as authorities say the gang operated coast to coast under a New York syndicate. Several suspects confessed during examination.
The third annual May festival at Sunny Side School will be held Friday afternoon May 23 from 2 to 3. The program features drills dances songs and a Maypole weaving by eight girls and eight boys. William Johnson age 19 a Wheeling West Virginia bridge worker was held by police for investigation today after confessing to three holdups. He was arrested last night following an alleged hold up and recently discharged from the army.
