E. M. Jennings announces T. Moore is named agent authorized to receive subscriptions and issue receipts for the 8 Messenge Bat Albany matter. Local notice cites Jennings as presenting the appointment and authority.

Samuel Juniper, earlier jailed for murderous assault in 1884 and paroled, was indicted for maiming after allegedly knocking Thomas Brunton’s eye out. He was found Sunday at Tinker’s Shaft below Jacksonville. Deputy Carl Porter secured him after a standoff and he awaits trial during the current term before likely returning to prison.
The records show applicants before the Medical Examining Board last week for pension consideration. Names include Oshua E. Weidman and Spencer K. Hill from units such as the 7th and 30th, plus O. V Irwin and others from the 141st, 148th, 6th West Virginia Cavalry, and Wis. Infantry. Also listed are George Smith and L. Albert Wells among others.
At a Cincinnati meeting, county auditors set the B&O main line at 7,800 per mile and branches at 3,000, adding about 10,000 to the county duplicate. Another session valued the Columbus, Hocking Valley and Toledo road, main line at 10,000 per mile and the Toledo division at 8,600 per mile.
The crops suffer from a severe freeze last Sunday morning with many grape vines cooked. The writer recalls a harsher freeze on June 5, 1859 that killed young shoots yet still yielded a strong grape crop that year. Hope remains for recovery in the affected vines.
The American Wool Reporter notes a continued decline in spirits in the wool market and warns that unless growers improve how they prepare wool for sale, consumers will increasingly turn to foreign wool. It argues that better preparation will drive dealer demand more than any other factor.
John L Helwig aged 59 a well known farmer south of Pleasanton died Wednesday of throat disease long afflicted. His funeral was held Friday at the M E church in Pleasanton with Rev Jewett officiating and a large attendance testified to the esteem he was held in.
A citizens meeting at the Mayor's office selected Mayor Minton as chair and D H Moore as secretary to organize the upcoming 115th anniversary of American Independence. Committees formed cover Finance Programme Advertising Parade Music and Guarantee Fund with L C Bean as treasurer and W B Golden as secretary. The group urged broad public support to ensure a creditable observance reflecting local liberality and patriotism.
An occasion of marked interest to the Knights of Pythias featured an amplified exemplification of the Knights Bank work. The Legend team led by Luke Lehman and others performed before about 150 visiting Knights from Logan Glouster Amesville and more, with Logan team garnering special approval and the gathering expressing unmodified gratification at the ceremonies.
Memorial Day program in Athens coordinated by Columbus Golden Post G A R and the local Woman's Relief Corps. They meet at Post Hall at 1 p m and march to the city hall for a memorial address by Gen. R R Dawes of Marietta. Procession proceeds to Washington street to receive flowers, then to Court street and State and to cemeteries for exercises. Afterward posts return to Post Hall. A ladies committee selects flowers: Miss Boyd, Mabel Brown, Beccoa Cochran, Ollie Wilson, M Louise Brashears, Kittie Hoisington, Nan Linton, Ida Maxwell, Minnie Dean, Helen Townsend. School children are asked to bring flowers to the city hall by 9 a m Saturday May 30.
