The Superior Coal Co has leased its mine near Clouster to The Phoenix Coal Co of Toledo on favorable terms. The lease covers about 690 acres and positions the lessee to operate the mine on a large scale, with G. G. Hadley of Toledo as president and manager and W. P. Read of Chicago as vice president of the new company.
Friends report Guy Welch won the Half Yearly Prize Declamation Contest at Peekskill Military Academy New York among twelve contestants. He earned a 98 out of 100 and received a silver medal. He was chosen to deliver the senior class oration next June.
The Rev Dr Joseph M Trimble a famed Methodist divine died at his Columbus home on Wednesday of last week in his 85th year He graduated from the University in Athens and last visited Athens to conduct Judge Leonidas Jewett s funeral a close personal friend
Mr. W. W. Watkins, owner of the Brown House, is able to attend to patrons again after a painful period of confinement for heart and stomach ailments. His chronic illness is linked to time spent as a prisoner of war at Andersonville.

George Williamson and Wallace Swindle were convicted by a Nelsonville court under an indictment for burglary after a short jury deliberation. Sam Onahue of Buchtel pleaded guilty to selling liquor to a minor. Judge de Steigner fined $25 plus costs and jailed him five days.

A concert for Hibbardsville Sabbath School will be given by the choir under P C Henry on Saturday evening May 238d. The event will be held under a large tent purchased for the purpose.
The Amplifield Bank of Knight will be worked the Logan Lodge at Athenian Lodge No. 104K of P next Monday May 18. All Knights are invited to attend and witness the work of this efficient seam.

The Marion County Importing Co sold their bay French Draft horse to A. H. Wolfe of Amesville Ohio for 3000 dollars. The horse is described as heavy bone short joints a strong back a good foot and fine action. The firm noted the sale was to a longtime customer and that such a high price was exceptional for their regularly sold stock.

A citizen meeting is scheduled at the Mayor's office on Friday evening in Athens to discuss measures for a proper and patriotic Fourth of July celebration. The organizers expect a large attendance.
Teachers are urged to buy tickets for the National Educational Convention in Toronto, July 4 to 17, 1891, via the Great Buckeye Route with reduced rates for side trips to Canadian resorts, the upper lakes, Niagara Falls, and other destinations, plus extended validity to September 30, 1891. The Buckeye Route offers smooth trains from the Ohio river to Toledo, linking with Great Trunk lines to Detroit and Toronto.
