The Alexander School Board, after a 90 minute executive session, advanced plans to construct a Wellness Center. An Ohio EPA ruling favorable since April 13 permits the septic sewage treatment system needed for the project. The board acted Monday night to proceed.
The board voted 5-0 to award a 1.5 million contract to Gutknecht Construction Co of Columbus for a 22,000 square foot Wellness Center to serve school and community use. Construction has begun and exterior should be substantially complete by year end. The facility will include two gyms, a walking track, weight area, and a Holzer Health Systems doctor’s office. The project faces ongoing sewer annexation and litigation with the village of Albany over sewer access.

Seven volunteer departments fought an overnight blaze in Middleport Meigs County after a Monday call reported a working structure fire at 175 North Second Ave. Keith R Day 31 of Middleport was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated arson a first degree felony. The fire heavily damaged Ingels Carpet and another building near the block center and was ruled arson by the State Fire Marshal. The Major Crimes Task Force Gallia Meigs assisted citing a tip. Alexander Local School District board members discussed levy options to cover a growing deficit. A spring 2017 ballot is likely with proposals including a 1 percent income tax generating about 1.7 million annually and an emergency property tax levy. The district has not passed an operating levy in 25 years and worries over education quality.
City Council in Athens debates a proposed 0.2 percent income tax hike to fund the general fund and street and community center programs. If approved by voters in November, the levy would take effect January 1, 2017 and expected to raise about 1.3 million dollars annually. Mayor Patterson explains the longstanding 1.65 percent rate and how funds are allocated amid rising expenses.
