Lawmakers debated a Ways and Means plan to cut tax on profits from stock and bond trades and on real estate and commodities. Dissenters warned benefits go to speculators and high earners while others called the measure an excellent move to stimulate business and income.
The House Banking Committee voted 18 to 4 for another year of federal rent control. The bill ends controls in cities not voting to extend them by June 30, 1951, with the current law expiring next month. Separately, 18-year-old Jack Hartman is held in Parkersburg for allegedly killing his grandparents.
Elkins West Virginia state police failed to identify a suspect after long hours of questioning. Fred J. Tharpe, 31, of Morgantown, was arrested after showing strong interest in the Berkeley Springs homicide. Lie detector tests yielded no conclusive findings and the victim remains unidentified.
The body of Emmett Whaley, 39, of Portsmouth, was recovered Wednesday after he wagered $2 he could cross the Ohio River and failed. He drowned May 6.
An electric refrigerator advertised for 50 dollars in The Messenger Want Ad section states Glen Romine of West Washington Street asked to cancel after selling the unit last night. The ad promotes daily use of classifieds to buy or sell items and notes a dialing number for results.

NY Mayor O Dwyer spoke on labor unity against GOP and Dixiecrat opposition. Tobin defended the program as Taft warned of bankruptcy. A national 35 hour week proposal was adopted to curb unemployment and fund strains. Lehman warned of rising unemployment and urged prompt action in line with the Fair Deal.
SHREVEPORT La.-)-A B 29 bomber carrying 16 persons crashed in the Azores with no survivors, officials said today. The aircraft departed from Barksdale Air Force Base with 11 crew members and five passengers, likely military personnel, on a routine training flight to England.
NEW YORK A former Cincinnati Clearing House secretary-manager William Dennison Duble 60 was freed after four months for involvement in a $50,000,000 yearly numbers racket. He was released Wednesday and presumed en route back to Cincinnati.
LORAIN police say 20 year old Tommy Sugerik jumped 75 feet from a bridge into three feet of water in the Black River last night. He was taken to St Joseph's Hospital in shock with minor injuries.
GOP Senators hailed Governor James H. Duff’s Pennsylvanian primary win as a rebuke to the Old Guard and a path for a Progressive Republican to secure the 1952 presidential nomination. Duff’s victory toppled Joseph R. Grundy and others who had long led GOP circles, prompting talk that a Progressive candidate can win the nomination and the presidency.
State Liquor Director Oscar L. Fleckner opened an inquiry into a possible information leak. Attorney Bernard S. Goldfarb accused a department source of tipping Forrest Allen of the Cleveland Press about the Artists and Writers Club finances. Fleckner will question Allen on his information source. the Press will not disclose it. Inspectors Brown and Matthews said they spoke only to their superiors during the club visit.
Ralph Packer of Toledo a life prisoner asked the Ohio Supreme Court to order his release claiming his 1946 first degree murder conviction violated his constitutional rights. Packer and Howard R. Hickman were sentenced to life for the slaying of Albert Arson during a restaurant holdup in Toledo on Oct 13 1945.
Michigan Senate passed a 270 million dollar Republican economy budget at 4 30 a m after a 12 hour Democratic filibuster. The measure was approved unanimously after 18 hours of meetings and Democrats agreed to end the stalemate to fund state government.
Oberlin College will invest about $70,000 in a $1,000,000 housing project to begin July 1. The college will provide lots sewers and streets on a 54 acre tract and seek repayment through non profit sales to faculty and town residents. Builders will finance the homes for buyers.
AFL Switchmen's Union of North America threatens a six thousand member walkout starting 6 a.m. Tuesday across ten railroads including Chicago Great Western and Northern Pacific Terminal Co. The strike aims for 48 hours pay for a 40 hour week amid a wage dispute, with mediation exhausted and 90,000 other workers unaffected.
Senate investigators pressed Senator McCarthy for evidence to back his charge that State Department loyalty files were rifled. McCarthy said proof requires Democratic members of the inquiry committee to support exposing the taping rather than concealing it. Deputy Undersecretary Peurifoy testified there has been no rifling of the records.
